SUMMARY

The Library Assistant-1 is a flexibly staffed position.  As an entry-level role, the position is expected to gain experience and knowledge in all departments to become completely competent in library operations.  This position will mainly work in the Technical Services and Children’s Service departments but should be adaptable to working on tasks and special assignments within any of the library’s internal teams.  As a member of the Children Services team, the Library Assistant-1 will be asked to demonstrate new technologies and library resources on request.  A professional, responsive, and flexible approach to work is essential to success in this role.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

Welcomes new patrons and informs new users of library services while working at the public service and other departmental desks

Registers new card holders, checks out library materials to customers, collects fines and fees, takes reserves for materials and communicates with patrons, maintains hold shelf

Opens and closes the library upon request as well as the cash drawer and public service desk Responds to customers in person or via the telephone regarding materials, programs, or general library information Charges and discharges circulation material, handles overdue notices and examines returned materials Assists customers with locating materials within the collection Develops library programs and displays with supervision Performs clerical duties such as answering phones, sorting mail, filing, etc. Participates in inventory initiatives within the collection, including shelving books Assists with general collection and bibliographic management Technical Services- mends and repairs library materials Children’s Services- advises children, caregivers, and teachers in locating and choosing appropriate material Children’s Servies-develops and implements library-related educational programs and activities for children Children’s Servies- prepares reading lists and bibliographies Exemplifies excellent patron service to all patrons that is culturally respectful

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, printers/copiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. Must have the ability to lift 25 pounds in the shifting and moving of library materials and equipment.  Must be able to navigate stairs, kneel, bend, stand for 30 minutes in duration, and stretch/stoop in the maintenance of various library collections on shelves throughout the library.  Normal speech quality and normal hearing ability expected at the level of 25 decibels through speech frequency, aided or unaided, to efficiently serve the public.  The ability to exert physical effort in sedentary to light work involving prolonged sitting, walking, or moving from one area of the building to another and standing for long period of time. Requires sufficient strength and coordination for lifting, pushing, and/or carrying the weight of small office equipment, files, or books.

TRAVEL

Occasional travel is expected, with the ability to perform various duties outside of the library and attend/lead offsite local outreach events, including childcare and school visits to promote the library offerings and child-focused initiatives.

Education/Qualifications:

High school or equivalency diploma and computer literacy Basic technical library skills along with the ability to deal tactfully and professionally with the public Excellent oral and written skills (English language) with attention to detail required.  Bi-lingual preferred (specifically Spanish or Creole) Basic arithmetic skills and proficiency in organization and record keeping Ability to work professionally and efficiently in a team with a positivity and courtesy Clerical proficiency and ability to run reports and use various databases Willingness to work a flexible schedule including some weeknights and weekends
