Position Duties:
The tasks below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional related tasks as necessary.

  • Provides general information on the justice system, both criminal and civil, and relevant court procedures to ensure meaningful access to the courts for unrepresented inmates; while refraining from giving legal advice.
  • Researches various records to determine if an inmate meets constitutional, statutory, and decisional law requirements for allowing access to the Jail Complex’s legal research materials/law library.
  • Creates and maintains a list of eligible inmates and the specific court cases for which the inmate is permitted to access the Brevard County Jail Complex law library.
  • Researches and provides copies of relevant or requested case information, forms, or legal materials using internet-based legal research sources.
  • Photocopies inmate evidentiary and supporting documents for pleadings, motions, and other court related paperwork.
  • Receives, disburses, and manages all incoming legal mail for inmates.
  • Receives, logs, and manages all outgoing legal mail sent by inmates.
  • Performs notary services where appropriate and necessary for inmates.
  • Maintains a file of inmate receipts.
  • Track, log and account for legal research material and photocopies issued to inmates. 
  • Submit timely supply orders for the law library.
  • Performs routine office tasks such as typing, scanning, filing, faxing, photocopying and telephoning. 


Requirements

  • Requires Associate's degree with emphasis in legal research, legal studies, paralegal studies, or closely related field.
  • Professional Certificate of Paralegal studies preferred.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the State of Florida as a Notary Public.
  • Preferred proficiency with Judicial System restricted databases (PACER, BECA/EFacts)
  • Preferred proficiency with Westlaw Edge ® and open-source electronic legal research platforms

Three (3)-Five (5) years of experience working in a law office, law library or closely related field.
 Additional Information:

  • Work is performed in an office environment located within a jail facility. Employees will have inmate contact.
  • Work is completed in eight (8) hour shifts during normal business hours (Monday through Friday 8am-5pm).
  • Valid Driver's License 
  • Successful completion of a criminal background investigation including polygraph.  Requires drug test prior to assuming position and if employed, will be subject to post-accident, and/or random and reasonable suspicion drug tests while employed.
