Job Description:

Responsible for performing original and complex copy cataloging, including bibliographic description, subject analysis, classification, and authority control for materials in all formats in accordance with established local and national policies, procedures, and standards. Advanced cataloging skills for non-monographic formats will be required. Special language competencies and/or subject knowledge will be required as needed.

Responsibilities:

• Performs original and complex copy cataloging, including bibliographic description, subject analysis, classification, and authority control for materials in all formats in accordance with established local and national policies, procedures, and standards.
• Performs original and complex cataloging for non-monographic formats such as serials, printed music, maps, films, video recordings, sound recordings, prints, electronic resources, microfilms, kits, and objects as assigned.
• Establishes, assigns, and verifies name, subject, form/genre, and uniform title entries according to national standards and local practices. Updates headings and resolves problems in the local database when necessary.
• Maintains a consistent output of cataloging, classification, and authority control work according to departmental standards for experienced catalogers.
• Performs catalog maintenance to ensure bibliographic integrity and resolves database problems whenever necessary.
• Participates in routine tasks and special projects involving the import, export, and modification of bibliographic, authority, and item records.
• As required, creates item records and/or resolves item record problems when necessary.
• As assigned, participates in the training of staff.
• As assigned, advises and assists staff in resolving copy cataloging and item maintenance problems for materials in all formats.
• As assigned, performs the review and revision of cataloging records produced by staff.
• Maintains current knowledge of existing and emerging cataloging standards, policies, and practices, including faceted bibliographic access.
• Remains current with existing and emerging descriptive cataloging schemas, vocabularies, content standards, and crowd/community-sourced input trends.
• Assists in evaluating, implementing, and suggesting changes in policies and procedures concerning descriptive and subject cataloging.
• Processes all materials according to defined Library priorities.
• Performs other related and comparable duties as assigned.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

• **Education **– A bachelor’s degree from a recognized college or university and a master’s degree in library science from an ALA-accredited library school. Relevant subject knowledge and/or specialized training will be required. In exceptional circumstances, specialized education, training, and/or experience may be substituted for part or all of the educational requirements.
• **Experience **– Two (2) years of recent professional library experience working with MARC21 bibliographic records. Knowledge of and recent experience with current and emerging national standards for cataloging and metadata.
• Ability to work with a Windows operating system required.
• Demonstrated proficiency in cataloging platforms such as OCLC Connexion highly desired.
• Working familiarity with cataloging standards such as Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH), Library of Congress Classification (LCC), and Resource Description and Access (RDA) is highly desired.
• Reading knowledge of one or more non-English languages is highly desired; the capability to identify and work with unfamiliar languages is required.
• Understanding of non-monographic formats and the ability to identify and apply relevant description conventions to their cataloging required.
• Direct experience working with one or more non-monographic formats is highly desired.
• Knowledge of current cataloging standards and formats, especially MARC21.
• Proficiency in standard productivity software, including word processing, spreadsheets, virtual communication, and collaborative platforms.
• Ability to execute library policy.
