The Trenton Free Public Library is expanding our staff! We are currently hiring for two full-time positions within the adult services department, each with a start date in early 2025.

Trenton is a vibrant, diverse city! The Library is located within walking distance of many restaurants, small businesses, and historic sites. The Library staff care deeply about the Trenton community and work hard to engage with its residents.

1. Emerging Technology / User Experience Librarian OR Library Associate

The main focus of this position is to create opportunities for patrons to learn about and engage with various types of technology and digital resources available through the Library. Successful candidates will have a familiarity with and passion for technology and crafting, as well as the ability to learn new technologies and share that knowledge with Library patrons.

Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • Creating, developing, and administering informational, educational, and recreational technology programming for patrons.
  • Monitoring spaces and tools designed or utilized for patron technology instruction or use.
  • Developing and conducting instructional computer classes for patrons.
  • Assisting patrons in use of technology.
  • Leading the creation of a crafting-focused maker space, to include sewing machines, Cricut machines, crafting supplies, etc.
  • Ensuring patrons have seamless interactions while using the Library’s website, research databases, online resources, and catalog.
  • Regular shifts on the Reference Desk.

Preferred Skills:

  • Bilingual fluency in English and Spanish
  • Ability to create, manage, and administer a Library program.
  • Operational knowledge of makerspace equipment & software (3D printer, laser cutter, heat press, audio/video recording and production equipment and software, and sewing machines, etc.) preferred.

2. Programming Librarian OR Library Associate

The main focus of this position is to develop, schedule, and manage a variety of programs for adults throughout the calendar year on a quarterly schedule. Successful candidates will have experience with event planning and execution in a public library or non-profit setting.

Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • Identifying opportunities for new and enhanced adult programs, collaborating with Library staff and community partners to develop, plan, and implement programs that meet the needs of the community in accordance with the Library’s mission.
  • Managing the adult summer reading and adult winter reading programs.
  • Adding adult programs to the Library’s website calendar.
  • Collaborating with TFPL’s communication and outreach library associate to support the promotion of all Library programs and services throughout the community.
  • Coordinating meeting room reservations for internal programs and external requests.
  • Tracking and maintaining the adult programming budget.
  • Identifying trends and opportunities and planning adult programming accordingly.
  • Regular shifts on the Reference Desk.

Preferred Skills:

  • Bilingual fluency in English and Spanish
  • Ability to create, manage, and administer a Library program.
  • Experience using ReadSquared.

All staff are required to maintain an awareness of trends in public libraries, continued professional development and being active in professional organizations is encouraged.

This is a full-time is 35-hours per week, Civil Service and Union workplace. Schedule includes one evening per week and one Saturday per month or so in rotation. The 2025 starting salary for Librarian 1 is $61,668; the 2025 starting salary for Library Associate is $45,743.

An MLS/MLIS from an ALA accredited institution and a New Jersey Librarian’s Certification are required for placement as Librarian. A full job description for Librarian 1 can be found on the State of New Jersey Civil Service Commission website. A Bachelor’s degree is required for Library Associates. Current library school students encouraged to apply. Applicants must be able to demonstrate experience with the specific duties of the position with examples.
