The Virginia Commonwealth University Libraries invites applications for a Research and Collections Coordinator for Special Collections and Archives (SCA). The incumbent will be a staff leader within the department, collaborating with faculty and staff to coordinate an array of public services and collection management functions in Special Collections and Archives.

The incumbent will be responsible for coordinating the reference desk schedule and the department email account, supervising student worker(s) and staff primarily responsible for the Special Collections and Archives Reading Room, and leading the User Services Team, which is tasked with creating and refining processes and procedures for our public facing services. They will oversee stack maintenance projects and assist with collection management. The incumbent will work with the Special Collections and Archives Processing team to assist with organizing, describing, and creating resource records for university archives and manuscript collections.

The strongest candidate for this role will have a passion for lowering barriers of access for Special Collections and Archives materials and is proficient with library or archival technologies.

Primary responsibilities include:

Coordinate and schedule the Special Collections and Archives Reading Room service point at the James Branch Cabell Library.

Monitor and distribute reference requests via the SCA departmental email account.

Assist and provide reference services to patrons via email, phone, or in person.

Coordinate and participate in stacks and collection maintenance projects, including shelf-reads, barcoding projects, and inventory management utilizing software such as ArchivesSpace and Alma.

Supervise 1 part-time hourly staff member and student(s) primarily responsible for staffing SCA Reading Room.

Assist library faculty with archival processing of manuscripts and university archives collections.

Create and enhance finding aids.

Work with departmental colleagues to promote and assist with outreach activities to support instruction, tours, and events as needed.Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree or a combination of equivalent education, training, and experience.

Previous work experience in a cultural heritage institution (e.g., library, archives, historical society, or museum).

Experience with the front-end and/or back-end of library systems (e.g., Alma/Primo, Voyager), archives databases (e.g., ArchivesSpace), or other collection management systems.

Ability to provide reference and research assistance to a wide variety of researchers including students, faculty, and community members.

Evidence of strong written and oral communication skills.

Evidence of critical thinking, attention to detail, organizational and analytical skills.

Evidence of ability and desire to work effectively, positively, and collegially with a wide variety of individuals.

Ability to work independently and with a team.

Ability to lift 30 pounds.

Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse and inclusive work environment or the commitment to do so as an employee at VCU.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience providing effective public services in an academic library or archival setting to a diverse clientele, including faculty, undergraduate, graduate students, and members of the public.

Demonstrated ability to execute workflows and meet multiple deadlines and objectives in a fast-paced environment.

Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information appropriately and with discretion.

Experience with archival processing and description.

This position is available for a Senior Library Specialist.
