Description
Performs original cataloging, verifying accuracy against corresponding data in similar MARC records. Performs copy cataloging by editing downloaded MARC bibliographic records according to guidelines in all subject areas and formats, expanding and verifying the data to conform to library standards. Maintains consistency in the cataloging and classification of library materials.
Utilizes these professional cataloging tools to assign call numbers, subject headings, and other descriptive information to all library materials: Resource Description and Access (RDA), Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH), Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) and MARC21 formats for bibliographic and authority data.
Works with Library Technical Assistants to organize and prioritize the unit projects and workflows including maintaining and updating unit procedures.
Regular maintenance of the integrated library system.
Performs reference/research assistance as assigned by Library Directors
Contributes to other professional activities of the Reference and Instruction Librarians such as maintaining research guides, serving as library liaison to a division, assisting with collection development, and staying current on professional theory and practices through literature, training, and networking; serves on additional library or college committees.
Performs other duties as assigned.
May be scheduled to work some weekends and evenings.
May be scheduled to teach bibliographic instruction sessions.
Requirements
Master’s degree in library and/or information science (MLS, MLIS, MSLS, or MSIS) from an ALA-accredited institution by the time of appointment, or must be earned within five (5) months of employment. If not earned by set deadline, employment will end.Â
Knowledge of best practices, trends, and standards of cataloging operations in an academic library setting.
Knowledge of best practices, trends, and standards of integrated library systems.
Knowledge of/or ability to catalog a variety of physical and electronic library materials.
Knowledge of/or ability to learn the use of appropriate digital technology (hardware and software), such as OCLC WMS, MarcEdit, OCLC Connexion, RDA Toolkit, and Classification Web.
Knowledge of /or ability to learn and apply the following cataloging tools: RDA, LCSH and DDC, and MARC21 formats for bibliographic and authority data.
Skilled in oral, written, and interpersonal communications.
Demonstrated ability to read, write, and speak English; to perform basic mathematical calculations; to learn and use the online library database system.
Strong interpersonal, research, analytical, organizational, and time management skills, and attention to detail.
Ability to work effectively in both a team setting and independently and be strongly service oriented.
