Job Description:

Amherst College invites applications for the Project Cataloger position. The Project Cataloger is a part-time, casual position with no benefits, starting at $22/hour - commensurate with experience. Given Amherst's distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, the successful candidate will demonstrate the ways in which they bring value to and will work towards supporting a broadly diverse community.

The Project Cataloger will work on projects to re-classify and copy catalog resources in the library's collection of music scores and sound recordings. This includes reviewing and updating bibliographic records in OCLC, assigning Library of Congress Classification numbers, and updating records in our library services platform (FOLIO). The Project Cataloger will also perform physical processing of materials, such as labeling.

Summary of Responsibilities:

CatalogingReviews and updates MARC bibliographic records in OCLC according to national standards

  • Creates new and/or verifies and assigns existing Library of Congress Classification numbers
  • Updates holdings in OCLC to ensure accurate representation in WorldCat
  • Updates bibliographic, holdings, and item records in FOLIO following consortial best practicesPhysical processing
  • Prints and applies spine labels
  • Makes pamphlet binders for materials as needed and identifies other repair or processing needsQualifications:

Required

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • 1 to 3 years of Related Experience
  • Experience in resource description, including creating MARC bibliographic records and assigning Library of Congress Classification numbers
  • Experience cataloging music scores and/or sound recordings
  • Demonstrated analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Demonstrated commitment to effectively supporting a broadly diverse and intentionally inclusive community
  • Awareness of critical concerns in the field, including bias in resource description
  • Successful completion of required reference and background checksPreferred
