Salary Range: $50,000- $65,000 annualized with flexibility, commensurate with education, experience and qualifications.

Job Summary

The Metadata Librarian is responsible for setting policies and advancing priorities for resource description across all formats. This position leads a unit responsible for original and complex copy cataloging of library materials in all formats, as well as the associated authority work, quality control, maintenance, and remediation necessary to ensure efficient and effective access to library collections. The Metadata Librarian ensures compliance with cataloging and classification standards, develops appropriate procedures and quality-assurance workflows in accordance with those standards, and adapts processes to emerging technologies and best practices in the field.

Core Responsibilities

Typical:

  1. Oversees cataloging operations for the UTSA Libraries, ensuring compliance with current standards for bibliographic and authority control.
  2. Establishes policies, priorities, and best practices for cataloging and metadata creation, quality assurance, maintenance, and remediation.
  3. Performs original and complex copy cataloging of library resources in all formats, with a particular emphasis on rare or unique materials.
  4. Coordinates the inflow, maintenance, and removal of metadata for electronic resources and collections.
  5. Serves as the primary point of contact for library staff on issues related to bibliographic description and metadata management.
  6. Hires, supervises, evaluates, and provides ongoing training for support staff.
  7. Works collaboratively with other department and library staff to identify, plan, execute, and/or participate in special and planned projects.
  8. Performs additional duties as assigned.Periodic:
  9. Reviews original cataloging performed by other staff.
  10. Assists in developing and documenting metadata input standards.
  11. Assists in developing and documenting policies and procedures.
  12. Attends professional meetings, workshops, seminars, and conferences in order to stay informed about emerging trends, technologies, standards, and best practices in the field.
  13. Coordinates with staff in other areas to ensure access to library collections.Required Qualifications
  • Accredited MLS/MLIS.
  • Two years of full-time experience performing original and complex copy cataloging in a library.
  • Experience using a library services platform such as Alma/Primo.
  • Experience with tools for editing bibliographic data such as OCLC Connexion, MarcEdit, and OpenRefine.
  • Experience training and supervising regular, non-student staff.
  • Experience creating clear, concise procedural documentation.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of national and international standards for library resource description, subject analysis, and classification; strong familiarity with commonly used metadata schemas.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of authority records and authority control procedures.
  • Effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently or collaboratively with various stakeholders.
  • Ability to quickly digest and apply new knowledge.Preferred Qualifications
  • At least two years of experience training, supervising, and evaluating regular, non-student staff in a library setting.
  • Experience or coursework in describing rare books and manuscripts.
  • Cataloging experience with non-English materials.
  • Experience using vendor-supplied records.
  • Experience with metadata mapping and conversion.
  • Familiarity with emerging content standards, vocabularies, and descriptive metadata formats.
  • Knowledge of conceptual models for bibliographic and authority information.
  • Knowledge of issues related to systems interoperability.
  • Ability to develop, propose, and implement project plans.
