The University of Nevada, Reno seeks a Life Sciences Librarian at the Assistant or Associate Professor level to provide library instruction, research consultation, and collection development services for students and faculty in disciplines such as agriculture, veterinary and rangeland sciences, biology, biochemistry and molecular biology, and environmental sciences. This is a full-time, tenure-track faculty position. Located in the Libraries’ Research and Instructional Services department, this position will collaborate on initiatives related to outreach, systematic review support, research help services, scholarly communications support, assessment, and others. 

This position is part of the University of Nevada, Reno Libraries’ liaison librarian program that emphasizes engaging information literacy instruction, research support for both novice and advanced researchers, and active engagement in outreach activities to promote the Libraries and build campus partnerships. The Libraries value excellent oral and written communication skills, a strong service orientation, a willingness to experiment with new methods and technologies, an openness to change, and a collaborative approach to meeting user needs. This is a tenure-track faculty position, with 70% of the expectations related to librarianship, 15% to scholarly activity and publication, and 15% to service activities. Key responsibilities for the position include:

  • Provide in-depth research consultations regarding specialized resources and tools for research in the life sciences to faculty, staff, undergraduate students, graduate students, and community members.
  • Design and conduct curriculum-integrated instructional sessions in the liaison areas both in person and online, in consultation with faculty regarding their teaching objectives.
  • Create and maintain library guides, and create effective online instructional materials such as LMS modules, online tutorials, and other learning objects.
  • Support library collections in the liaison areas, respond to faculty and student requests for library materials, and collaborate with other library departments on collections-related issues.  
  • Be willing to learn about and provide support for evidence synthesis projects in the liaison disciplines through tasks such as assisting with project planning, teaching advanced search strategies, and teaching appropriate tools.  
  • Provide support for the research needs of faculty and students in the sciences by responding to basic scholarly communications questions such as those related to open access and journal publication.
  • Participate in and extend the Research and Instructional Services Department’s outreach, promotion, assessment, and instructional initiatives, including research help services.
  • Work effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse communities and cultures.
  • Conduct academic research, publish work in peer-reviewed journals and other outlets in the library and information science field, and present work at professional conferences.
  • Serve on professional and university committees and participate in other professional service activities.
  • Engage in continuous learning to update knowledge and skills related to science librarianship. 


The Life Sciences Librarian is an in-person position housed on the University's main campus with occasional business travel, nights and weekends required.



Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent by hire date
  • Two (2) years of experience in a library setting or an advanced degree in a life sciences discipline
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in library services


Preferred Qualifications

  • Background in and/or familiarity with sources, issues, and trends in science research and science librarianship  
  • Experience collaborating with faculty in a liaison librarian capacity
  • Experience planning and delivering library services and/or information literacy instruction
  • Experience with technologies that support research skills and/or online learning (e.g., Canvas, Springshare, Zotero)
