Position Summary

The Data Visualization Specialist will play a key role in advancing research, teaching, and scholarly communication at the UNM Health Sciences Center by providing consultation and training in data visualization, research data management, and open science practices. This open rank faculty member will guide faculty, researchers, and students in analyzing, interpreting, and presenting complex data using effective visualization techniques, while promoting best practices in data organization, storytelling, and sharing. This position also contributes to institutional policy development, interdisciplinary research, and scholarly output that enhances the impact and accessibility of UNM's research.

This is a full-time, benefits eligible faculty position with a primary appointment in HSLIC. The UNM provides a diversified package of benefits including medical, dental, vision, and life insurance. Appointment is posted as open rank, to be determined based on qualifications. Salary range: $76,267.00 - $80,281.05.

Responsibilities:

• Develop and support institutional data management and visualization services that align with HSLIC's mission and goals, including consulting on research proposals, data organization, and visual representation of data.
• Develop and lead training (in-person, online and asynchronous) on data management and data visualization tools and techniques (e.g., Tableau, R, Python or similar tools) to support faculty, researchers, and students.
• Provide consultation on research data management, visualization strategies, FAIR data principles, and ethical data practices, including best practices for curating, organizing, structuring, and preserving research data or related artifacts.
• Support researchers in developing data-driven figures, dashboards, and interactive visualizations for grants, publications, and presentations, ensuring effective data storytelling and communication.
• Guide researchers and faculty in creating and implementing data management plans to meet funder and institutional requirements, including advising on data sharing, metadata, and repository use.
• Collaborate on interdisciplinary research projects requiring expertise in data management, data curation, and visualization.
• Advise on the development of institutional policies and strategies for research data organization, curation, and compliance with open science and data-sharing principles, including support for FAIR data integration and repository services.
• Represent HSLIC on relevant committees within the UNM Health Sciences Center and across the university, providing technical expertise on research data management, visualization, and scholarly communication.
• Engage in faculty activities, including research, publishing, and presenting at professional conferences, as well as teaching, consultation, service, and leadership in data visualization and research data management initiatives.

Required/Minimum:

• Master's degree in Library or Information Science from an ALA-accredited (or foreign equivalent) program, or advanced degree in a related field such as data science, computer science, information visualization, or a data-intense health sciences field.
• Applicants must be eligible to work in the U.S.
• Demonstrated knowledge of data visualization, research data management, or digital scholarship in an academic, research, or health sciences setting.

Preferred:

• Experience with data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, R, Python, or similar tools).
• Ability to teach or communicate data visualization concepts to diverse audiences, including researchers, students, and faculty.
• Knowledge of data storytelling techniques, accessibility standards, and ethical practices in data visualization.
• Knowledge of research data management practices, including metadata standards and the use of data repositories.
• Experience working with data as part of a collaborative research team.
• Evidence of interest and readiness to engage in librarianship, education, research, and service in alignment with faculty expectations at the University of New Mexico. Examples may include prior teaching, presentations, publications, participation in research projects, or other scholarly and professional activities.
