The Upper Hudson Library System seeks a visionary leader with a commitment to the vital importance of libraries and public library systems to be its next Executive Director. They will demonstrate excellent communication skills and will have substantial library management experience.

The Upper Hudson Library System (UHLS) is a nonprofit organization that supports and assists the 29 public libraries in Albany and Rensselaer counties in New York. This very diverse geographic area covers over 1,100 square miles and includes a wide variety of communities and the public libraries that serve them. UHLS operates from its office in Albany, NY and provides shared library services (catalog, delivery, digital collections, etc.), continuing education, outreach, and IT support. It maintains a shared catalog of over 1.5 million physical and digital items available to member library users. Reporting to a 14-member Board of Trustees, the Executive Director is responsible for oversight of a $2.18 million budget and 8 system staff, and works collaboratively with the library directors and library trustees of the 29 UHLS member libraries.

New York’s Capital Region offers four seasons of abundant outdoor activities, numerous historic sites and museums, and a lively art, cultural and social scene. Conveniently located between the Catskill and Adirondack mountains, it is just a short drive from NYC, Montreal, and Boston.

Responsibilities: Under the direction of the Board of Trustees, the Executive Director acts as Chief Executive Officer of the Upper Hudson Library System and operates in accordance with the UHLS charter, mission, plan of service, policies, procedures, and goals. Additionally, the Executive Director:

  • oversees the development and implementation of the annual budget in collaboration with the UHLS staff and submits it to the board for approval;
  • provides strong leadership for a positive and collaborative work environment both within UHLS and with the member libraries;
  • assists with long range planning;
  • proposes services, activities, and initiatives for UHLS based on stakeholder feedback;
  • works with the board to develop and implement policies, procedures and goals;
  • maintains collaborative working relationships and open communications with member library directors, trustees, government officials, community groups, and other partner organizations;
  • and leads advocacy efforts with state officials on behalf of the System and the member libraries. More information can be found in the Executive Director’s job description on the UHLS website.

Qualifications: A master of library science degree (MLS, MLIS or equivalent) from an ALA-accredited graduate library or information program; eight or more full years of professional library experience in libraries or library systems (post-graduate), including at least two in an administrative capacity, as per Commissioner of Education Regulation 90.3(f); and possession of a New York State Public Librarian Certificate or the ability to obtain one. The ideal candidate will possess excellent communication skills, the ability to promote values and innovation in public library service, familiarity with current public library service trends, a demonstrated history of successful executive leadership, and a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.

This is a full-time position with some remote work opportunities and a competitive benefits package, including participation in the NYS Retirement System. The starting salary range for this position will be $115,000-125,000, depending on the selected candidate’s experience and qualifications.
