Teen Librarian

The Linda Sokol Francis Brookfield Library, serving a community of nearly 20,000 and home to the world-famous Brookfield Zoo, seeks its next Teen Librarian.

The selected candidate will be expected to work within a team of peers to provide a diverse range of professional library services including planning and presenting teen classes and events, collection development, staffing the reference desk, instructing members in the use of electronic and print resources, and a variety of related tasks. Position reports directly to the Adult & Teen Services Manager.

**Education, Training, and Experience: ** An M.L.S. from an ALA-accredited institution, plus one year of responsible professional librarian experience.

**Essential Duties and Responsibilities: ** •    Works under the direct supervision of the Adult & Teen Manager as part of the Adult & Teen Services team in providing Library services to the community.    •    Provides information, readers advisory, and reference services through a variety of ways including in-person, by phone, and online.  •    Instructs members of all ages in the use of library resources, including online reference materials, catalogs, computer, and interlibrary loan procedures.  •    Develops and presents events and services directed at young adults ages 11-18. •    Reviews materials for selection and acquisition for the Teen & Young Adult collection and makes recommendations for selection of a wide range of book, periodical, and audio-visual materials. •    Organizes, weeds, and maintains assigned collections. •    Creates displays and bibliographies to highlight teen book collections or services.  •    Plans and delivers teen classes & events and conducts outreach to area partners. •    Collaborates with staff to support the Library’s social media presence and website content related to teen services. •    Performs related work as required.

Required Competencies:
•    Requires knowledge of the principles and practices of public library functions.  •    Knowledge of current trends in library services for and with young adults and the ability to cultivate classes & events appropriate for the community.   •    Demonstrated ability and enthusiasm for working with the public. •    Ability to engage and communicate well with teens and young adults. •    Should be Internet savvy, with excellent knowledge of reference tools and procedures.   •    Must be able to effectively communicate both orally and in writing, and be able to develop and present public information materials to promote library use. •    Proficiency with use of social media technology.    

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:  Performs duties in a climate-controlled environment.  Routinely exposed to computer screen and may sit for long periods of time.  May be required to lift light to medium weights, e.g. books and audio-visual materials.  Involves occasional travel to conferences and meetings.  

Professional Responsibilities:  Professional staff are expected to keep abreast of current   trends and techniques in public library service; participate in the activities of professional library organizations; and pursue continuing education.
