Primary Responsibility: The acquisitions specialist supports the day-to-day acquisitions, cataloging, processing, and record-keeping functions of the technical services department of the library.

Essential Functions:

Technical Services:

  • Assists with library materials acquisitions:
    1. Uses web-based vendor platforms, local spreadsheets, and the ILS to prepare orders for library materials and track order data.
    2. Keeps track of library material selections and requests.
    3. Researches local holdings to avoid duplication in orders.
    4. Receives and inspects library materials shipments.
    5. Maintains accession and deaccession records including yearly list of weeded materials.
    6. Accepts and assists in evaluation of donated materials to the library collection.
    7. Assists with patron driven acquisitions as needed.
  • Obtains, edits, and imports bibliographic records to the library catalog.
    1. Searches for MARC records and evaluates appropriateness of matching records for the item in-hand.
    2. Edits MARC records in compliance with bibliographic description standards and local conventions in order to correct or enhance records for the library catalog.
    3. Uses ILS software to import MARC records and maintain item records in the library catalog.
    4. Uses copy-cataloging techniques to add complete records to the library catalog.
    5. Conducts monthly e-resource editing and loading of video and eBook MARC records.
    6. Maintains demand driven acquisitions of eBooks.
  • Prepares library materials for each stage of the collection cycle:
    1. Applies property stamps, adhesive barcodes, adhesive book covers, and security strips.
    2. Creates and attaches call number labels, notices, and donation plates.
    3. Assists in evaluation of materials for weeding.
    4. Withdraws weeded materials and prepares for shipment, local book sale, or disposal.
  • Inspects damaged library materials and performs repairs as needed.
  • Trains support staff and volunteers to assist with processing materials.
  • Compiles monthly statistics including usage of print and electronic materials.
  • Other special technical services projects as assigned.

Miscellaneous:

  • Participates in library displays and programs on a rotating basis.
  • Participates in library social media (Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, blog) by contributing content on a monthly basis.
  • Contributes quarterly articles to the Library's newsletter.
  • Participates on library committees as needed.
  • Participates in professional growth opportunities.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Library experience preferred.
  • Flexible to accommodate organizational needs.
  • Knowledge of library catalog and database searching.
  • Familiarity with bibliographic records and RDA standards.
  • Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office programs (especially Excel, Outlook, and Word).
  • Must be able to work with standard office equipment such as computers, photocopying machines, computers, scanners, and printers.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.

Working Conditions:

  • Works in a normal library setting.
