Acorn Public Library District is seeking a friendly and enthusiastic individual who enjoy working with the public to join its staff as a part-time Youth Services Assistant. This individual must possess the ability to represent the library in a positive fashion to all patrons and guests. Hours will include mornings, afternoons, evenings and alternating Fridays/Saturdays and some Sundays as needed by the department. This position averages 18 hours per week. The part-time Youth Services Assistant works closely with the entire library staff to serve the public providing assistance at the Youth Services Desk by the following:

  • Provides general reference, reader's advisory, and system-wide hold services and assistance in the Library and on the phone to children and adults.

  • Participates in the creation and presentation of programming services offered by the Youth Services Department.

  • Acts as the Library's Person-in-Charge when designated as such. 

  • Checks Library materials in and out accurately.

  • Aids in shelving department materials accurately.

  • Aids in the weeding process.

  • Participates in shelf reading to ensure materials are shelved in their proper order. 

  • Straightens materials on shelves.

  • Assists patrons in the use of computers, tablets, online services, Internet, copier, self-check-out, computer catalog, and other equipment available for public use.

  • Plans and prepares materials for displays, bibliographies, and other materials.

  • Registers patrons for library programs in person and over the phone.

  • Makes reminder calls/emails for library programs and events. 

  • Performs opening and/or closing procedures.

Performs other miscellaneous duties as assigned 

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required, LTA or Bachelor’s Degree preferred. 

  • At least six months experience in customer service.

  • Effectively communicate in English both orally and in writing.

  • Effectively multitask.

  • Maintain a cohesive working relationship with library staff.

  • Read computer and other office equipment screens.

  • Stand/sit for long periods, walk, bend, stoop, reach, lift, stand on a stool, and push/pull heavy carts.

Skills

  • Provide excellent customer service.

  • Type accurately.

  • Use personal computers and software applications as well as web-based utilities and applications.
