About the Role

As a vital member of our Library management team, the Youth Services Librarian focuses on creating a vibrant and inclusive environment for youth and their families. You’ll oversee programming, outreach, and collection development while collaborating with staff and the community to ensure the library remains a hub for connection, discovery, and growth.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement engaging programs, events, and outreach services for youth of all ages and abilities.
  • Manage and curate the library’s youth collection, ensuring it is inclusive, diverse, and responsive to community needs.
  • Partner with schools, local organizations, and community groups to expand the library’s reach and impact.
  • Work with the Adult Services Librarian on multigenerational programs and events.
  • Serve as a mentor and supervisor to library assistants, shelving staff, and volunteers.
  • Collect and analyze usage statistics to guide decision-making and planning.
  • Play an active role in the library’s strategic planning and policy development.

What You Bring

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Library Science (MLIS) from an ALA-accredited program (or the ability to obtain within six months of hire).
  • At least one year of supervisory experience.
  • Strong knowledge of library principles, reader’s advisory, and information services.
  • Exceptional communication, organizational, and customer service skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • One or more years of experience working with youth.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and execute programs for children and teens.
  • Experience in a library or public sector environment.
  • Fluency in a language other than English is a plus.

Physical & Technical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds, move book carts, and operate standard library equipment.
  • Valid Iowa Driver’s License (or ability to obtain before employment).
