The Youth Services Division Head is the 2nd most senior person in the Youth Services department and reports directly to the YS Department Head. Division Heads are the senior most staff in the union. They are expected to fill in when a manager is absent and be a reliable mentor and leader to junior staff. Flexibility, assertiveness, and reliability are crucial characteristics.Â
Job Summary
Assists all patrons in the use of library equipment and materials including patron-use computers. Helps plan, publicize and implement programs for children and their caregivers. Participates in collection development, reference services and reader’s advisory for young patrons. Assists in planning, scheduling and providing tours to local schools and other community organizations, both in and out of the Library. Will cross train and be expected to fill in at other desks. Must be comfortable interacting with and serving tweens and teens, not just young children.Â
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Works under the supervision of the Youth Services Department Head, with additional guidance from Administrative staff.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
Provides limited direction to the page staff and junior staff, may be asked to serve as manager in absence of department head. May be asked to serve as building manager in the absence of all department heads.Â
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Direct patron services including reference, circulation, and programming work. Assists in collection development, displays, outreach, and school visits. Opening and closing the department and building when necessary, enforcing policies and procedures with patrons and subordinate staff. Other duties as assigned. Will work one night per week and some weekend shifts.
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelors Degree Required, MLS or Equivalent Graduate Degree preferred
Previous library experience 3-5 years, specific to Youth Services, knowledge of current educational theory and practice is highly desirable
Ability to be on time, reliable, and responsible.
Knowledge of Spanish, Portuguese, or Haitian Creole is a plus.Â
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND DESIRABLE ABILITIES:
Ability to meet people easily and get along well with others.
Ability to express oneself clearly, concisely and pleasantly in the English language both orally, in person and over the phone, and in writing.
Ability to handle minute detail.
Accurate typing and word processing skills, proficient in Microsoft Office suite, database, and ILS.
Ability to learn new skills quickly.
Ability to handle situations with tact, courtesy, initiative, resourcefulness, good judgment and punctuality.
Ability to multitask and perform duties with little supervision.
