Would you like to take the lead in bringing innovative Youth Services to Nahant? The smallest town by landmass in Mass is looking for a creative thinker to run story times and other programming, run the town-wide Summer Reading Program, and manage the Children’s and Young Adult collections. Solid grounding in child education and children’s literature, project management, customer service, and teamwork to fulfill annual goals are a must. The candidate we need will:

  • Develop and maintain the Children’s and Young Adults’ collections; order and purchase circulating materials for the Department; ensure all materials and resources are current and kept in good order
  • Develop and implement all Department programs including story times, arts and craft activities, family friendly performances, and the Summer Reading Program
  • Promote Children’s and Young Adults’ events and materials via flyers, newsletters, displays and social media
  • Perform outreach at the local school, town rec department, and other locations
  • Register patrons for library cards; check materials in and out; explain library services and procedures; print, copy or scan documents; answer short reference questions
  • Answer the telephone; address general questions and short reference questions
  • Keep current about the community, other area libraries, and librarianship
  • Demonstrate a willingness to serve the community and assist the rest of the staff 

All work is performed under the administrative direction of the Library Director. Employee should be able to negotiate a non-accessible facility, lift as much as 30 pounds, and operate computers and copier. The employee should be proficient in Microsoft Office, email, and social media. Employee has frequent contact with the general public, schools, vendors, and other public groups. Contacts are in person, via email or by telephone. Ability to communicate well in all these settings is mandatory.

Master’s in Library Science preferred, Bachelor’s Degree required. One to three years of children’s educational or library experience preferred or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Salary range is $41, 200 – $53, 600 a year with full benefits package and a 37.5 hour work week. Schedule includes Saturdays and one evening a week. The library is closed Sundays and Mondays.
