Job Summary: Berkeley Heights Public Library is seeking a friendly, reliable, and customer-service oriented Children's/Youth Services Department Assistant to join our team on a part-time basis. This position involves working directly at the Children’s Room desk, providing support to children, teens, and their families by assisting with library services and helping with various youth programming. The ideal candidate will have a passion for working with children and teens, strong communication skills, and the ability to multitask in a busy library environment.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Greet and assist library patrons, including children, teens, and caregivers, at the Children’s Room desk in a friendly manner. 
  • Support the daily operations of the Youth Services department, including shelving, organizing materials, and maintaining a welcoming and organized space for children and families.
  • Hosting, assisting, and preparing programming opportunities for ages 0-20.
  • Assist with library promotional efforts for youth services, including distributing flyers, newsletters, and event information.
  • Perform general reception duties including fielding in-person, email, and telephone inquiries.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Prior experience working with children or in a library setting is preferred but not required.
  • Strong customer service skills and the ability to interact with children, teens, and families in a positive and approachable manner.
  • Basic knowledge of youth literature and programming.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.

Requirements/Essential Qualifications:

  • Possess customer service experience in a library, office, or retail environment.
  • Computer skills and the ability to learn the library software.
  • Ability to push library carts up to 40 pounds and move library materials as needed.
  • A flexible schedule including regularly scheduled evenings and weekends.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Hours: Current hours are Monday 8:45 am to 1 pm, Tuesday 5 pm- 9pm, Wednesday 8:45 am to 1 pm, Friday 1-5 pm, with other hours as needed, around 16-20 hours a week. One Saturday/Sunday a month is required.
