Rutgers University Libraries are the intellectual center of the university-serving all members of the university community, supporting all disciplines, and playing a key role in advancing student learning and faculty research. Among the key duties of the position are the following:

  • Provides circulation services including checkout, returns, patron and item record maintenance.
  • Understands and interprets policy for users and part-time employees; solves routine and nonroutine, complex user problems and refers unresolved problems and questions to a supervisor.
  • Instructs users on how to use My Account, renew their checkouts, places requests for books, digitization, and Interlibrary loan books and articles, and how to search and use course reserve materials.
  • Provides directional and general library information assistance.
  • Works with desktop applications such as MS Office and library automated software while performing the work of the Access Services unit.
  • Monitors student workers on the accurate use of appropriate library and university systems; serves as a resource to student employees.

Position Status: Part Time

Hours Per Week: 19.5

FLSA: Nonexempt

Position Salary: $17 - $19 per hour

Payroll Designation: PeopleSoft

Minimum Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Careful attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Computer skills, such as the use of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to learn a variety of specialized library management systems.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Ability to lift/carry books and packages and push/pull carts up to 50lbs.

Special Conditions

  • Must be available to work evenings and/or weekends.
  • This is a one-year appointment.
