Youth Services Associate

The Oak Lawn Public Library has an opening for a full-time Youth Services Associate, Grade VI, Step 1 in the Youth Services Department.

This is a 37 ½ – hours per week “non-exempt” position with a work schedule that includes evenings and weekends. Salary is $39,292.56 per year in the Youth Services Department. An excellent benefits package includes position with a full benefits package, (i.e., vacation, sick, personal business, floating holiday, birthday holiday, and insurance benefits as well as IMRF pension plan participation), per the current Administrative Regulation ARs / AFSCME Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Job Duties 

•  Support the Youth Services Department by initiating and reinforcing consistent workflow, providing excellent youth services, and assisting with programming and promotions.

• The nature of assigned tasks and responsibilities will depend, in part, upon the number of hours scheduled.

• Oversee the youth reference desk in coordination with department librarians. Answer directional questions placed via any format. Assist patrons in locating information and materials. Assist patrons in the use of library equipment. Provide reader’s advisory service.

• Plan and conduct programs and outreach initiatives in cooperation with and under the supervision of department librarians including but not limited to in-person, virtual, and off-site programming.

• Coordinate with department librarians to promote the library’s physical and digital collections relevant to community needs; recommend collection materials for library purchase, assist with inventory and weeding projects.

• Collect and maintain department statistics. Maintain and request supplies.

• Keep informed of developments in the library and youth services fields through reading and participation in professional activities and meetings.

• Perform other tasks assigned by department supervisor.

• Assume responsibility for Youth Services Department in the absence of the supervisor and/or department librarians.

Position Requirements 

Bachelor’s Degree in a related field; Minimum of three years library experience; Interest and ability in working with the public, specifically children; Communicate effectively both orally and in writing, including the ability to create and present viable public programs; Ability to work independently and with attention to detail; High degree of computer literacy Schedule includes evenings and weekends
