Pay Rate/Range: The budgeted salary that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $25.80/hour. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience; the budget for the position; and the application of fair, equitable, and consistent pay practices at the University. The full salary range for this position is $25.80 to $36.95/hour.

Work Location: 1302A - Davidson Library

Working Days and Hours: Wednesday 12pm-5pm, Thursday-Friday, 9am-5pm, occasional Saturdays (variable hours).

Brief Summary of Job Duties:

Limited (Less 1000 hours in 12 consecutive months) position to assist with the planning and implementation of community-based archives events and other planned local history programming within Special Research Collections. Reporting to the Director of Special Collections (SRC) and with direction from the Santa Barbara and Local History Curator and Archival Processing team, the Library Assistant will provide support for community-based archives programs and other local history programming initiatives including outreach and engagement with community members, event planning and implementation, occasionally off site and on weekends, preparing materials acquired through projects for special projects, and facilitating the return of original materials and digital surrogates to participating community members.

Required Qualifications:

Ability to utilize independent judgment; ability to solve complex problems.

  • 1-3 years of demonstrated customer service experience and ability to work effectively with the general public as well as students, staff, and faculty.

  • High degree of computer literacy and comfort in the digital environment; the ability to independently learn new technologies and their applications in libraries.

  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Bachelor's Degree with an emphasis in history, library science, archival studies, ethnic studies, public history, and/or film and media studies or equivalent training and/or experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Paid or volunteer work in a library, museum, or similar organization.

  • Planning, organizing, and implementing public programming.

  • Professional working proficiency of Spanish.

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:

  • 35% Curatorial Assistance - Assists the planning of SRC community-based archives projects through strategic community outreach and engagement activities- including collaboration on strategizing for project goals, engagement and communication with community members and participants in projects. Supports intake and acquisition of collection materials. Assists Director of SRC, the Santa Barbara and Local History Curator and Archival Processing team with inventory, description, organization, and management of community-based collections. Initiates intake of materials and initial descriptions for processing of collection materials, including basic metadata. Corresponds with community members to ensure forms and agreements are completed, and follows up to respond to inquiries or other issues.

  • 35% Events and Outreach - Assists with planning and implementing community based events- including outreach and engagement with stakeholders within the Library, campus, and Santa Barbara County community; preparation of workflows and materials; support with publicity of events; set up and take down of events; and contribution to event post-mortem. Responsible for maintaining event scheduling and coordinating between community stakeholders and SRC Curators. Represents UCSB Library at events and responds to a variety of questions related to community-based archives projects and other SRC collections. Includes occasional work off site and on weekends and evenings as needed. May work independently to organize, set up, and manage events.

  • 30% Vendor Project Preparation - Support library staff in preparing materials for special projects, such as vendor digitization, including organization of materials, inventory, and physical preparation for shipment.
