We’re committed to providing an equal employment opportunity and a work environment free from any discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, disability, veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, marital status, or pregnancy status.

The Omeka Team is looking for someone to contribute to our software functionality and user interface testing work for the Omeka family of web publishing platforms (Omeka Classic, Omeka.net, and Omeka S) and their extensions. Your job will be to collaborate with Omeka designers and developers to ensure that the software that we release is fully functional and accessible (WCAG standards, etc.).

This position is for someone with a wide range of skills: you should be comfortable working with software using a range of operating systems and environments: macOS, Windows, Linux, desktop, tablet, or mobile, in multiple browsers. Ideally, you should have a familiarity with common accessibility assessment tools. You should be comfortable working with Git and GitHub, via the command line. You will need to be detail oriented, with an enthusiasm for tracking down small variations in functionality and exposing bugs where they are not obvious. You will also need to be able to communicate clearly with designers and developers to identify and resolve issues in new and updated releases of Omeka core software, extensions, and themes.

As part of a small team, you’ll have collaborative responsibility for the functionality, usability, and accessibility of the software, always keeping in mind the needs and perspectives of end-users, and improvements to our software documentation where needed. At the same time, you’ll participate in a vibrant open-source community with amazing developers and passionate users.

We’re a dispersed team with an anchor group in Falls Church, VA. You’ll primarily be working remotely, communicating with the Omeka Team via Slack, GitHub, and web conference. We have a highly collaborative but asynchronous workflow, and you’ll be in control of your own schedule. Our hours are flexible and variable, but we maintain core availability between 10am and 4pm Eastern (America/New York).

Requirements

  • Experience testing software for functionality and usability, particularly on the web
  • Knowledge of HTML and CSS
  • Strong attention to accessibility standards (WCAG, Section 508)
  • Experience with Git and Github
  • Strong English communication skills — we discuss and debate nearly everything we do, so it’s critical that you can (and want to!) take part in that

Desired

  • Experience working with Omeka Classic and/or Omeka S
  • Familiarity with what makes good software documentation
  • Familiarity with digital cultural heritage work
  • Familiarity with linked open data standards and practices
  • Familiarity with screen readers and WCAG compliance
  • Previous remote work experience
  • A love of free and open-source software
