SUMMARY: The Rutgers University Libraries (RUL) seek a librarian for the sciences based at the John Cotton Dana Library at Rutgers University-Newark. The Science Librarian will be responsible for reference, instruction, collection development, and outreach activities in support of the life sciences, physical sciences, and mathematical sciences subject areas. This tenure-track position reports to the Associate University Librarian – Newark and will work collaboratively with the other RUL science librarians located throughout the RUL system. The city of Newark and its surrounding communities offer cultural and social experiences that contribute to the professional enrichment of this position.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The Science Librarian’s key responsibilities are to: • Serve as the library subject liaison to the science departments primarily within the School of Arts and Sciences-Newark and the graduate programs in these areas, by building relationships with faculty, students, and staff; developing user-centric resources and services; and participating in engagement and outreach activities. • Design and deliver library instruction for diverse populations, including engaging learning activities both in person and virtually. • Provide reference services to the University community, including participating in library reference on-site at the Dana Library and Libraries-wide virtual reference. • Provide research consultations that meet the needs of science scholars. • Participate in the collection development activities of Dana Library and the Rutgers University Libraries in support of the research and curricular needs of science programs. • Collaborate with other RUL science librarians and with other stakeholders to build robust services and collections supporting science research and education. • Contribute to the strategic initiatives and assessments of the Dana Library and the Rutgers University Libraries system; participate in university-wide initiatives, committees, and task forces. This position is a member of the Rutgers University Libraries Faculty, a team of librarians committed to providing excellent services to a diverse academic community. This position will collaborate with colleagues across the Libraries to enhance the effectiveness of library services to the University community. As part of the multi-campus Rutgers University Libraries and a member of the RUL Faculty, the new librarian is paired with a librarian mentor from outside their campus unit. This position may occasionally require working evenings and weekends. The successful candidate must demonstrate a commitment to continual professional development through scholarly research including publications, presentations, and participation and leadership in the work of relevant professional associations, as required elements for successful promotion and tenure at Rutgers University Libraries. QUALIFICATIONS: Required: • Master’s degree from an American Library Association-accredited program or its equivalent • Proficiency in using information systems and databases in the sciences • Knowledge or experience in planning and delivering library instruction sessions in a variety of modalities • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with varying audiences • Demonstrated commitment to foster diversity, equity, and inclusion as an organizational priority • Capacity for research, scholarly publication, and service consistent with requirements for tenure and promotion • Ability to build fruitful relationships and partnerships within the library and the university. The selected candidate should be able to understand institutional cultures and their impact on people and perspectives.
Preferred but not required: • Undergraduate or graduate degree, or equivalent work experience, in the sciences • Experience in science librarianship • Experience with assessment metrics and planning for library instruction, reference, and other engagement activities
Visa sponsorship is not available for this position. SALARY: Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Current contractual minimum salary for appointment as Librarian III (Assistant Professor equivalent) is $90.423. STATUS/BENEFITS: Faculty status, twelve-month appointment, retirement plan, life/health insurance, prescription drug, dental and vision plans, tuition remission, 22 vacation days annually.
LIBRARY PROFILE: John Cotton Dana Library and Institute of Jazz Studies: The John Cotton Dana Library, named after former Newark Public Library director John Cotton Dana, opened in 1966 and is the main library at Rutgers University–Newark, supporting all the institution’s undergraduate and graduate programs except for law.
