Starting Pay Range: $21.90 – $27.92 per hour DOE

JOB SUMMARY

This position provides support for library adult services functions.

MAJOR DUTIES

Provides assistance to patrons in the Adult Services section; answers reference questions in person, by telephone, and by email. Assists patrons in the use of public computers, photocopiers, WiFi, and printing. Proctors exams. Creates flyers and brochures along with book displays to promote library collection and special events. Assists with collection management, including weeding and identifying titles for acquisition. Manages nonfiction shelves and ensures that the collection remains organized, accessible, and well-maintained. Edits newsletters. Assists Adult Services Librarian in the planning and coordination of adult programs. Processes interlibrary loan requests. Assists patrons with genealogy research. Provides Reader’s Advisory services in all adult and Young Adult fiction and non-fiction genres. Checks library materials in and out; collects patron fines; assists patrons in locating library materials. Issues and renews library cards to patrons. Maintains lists of supplies and materials. Performs all other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

Knowledge of public library policies, procedures, programs, and services. Knowledge of patron services principles. Knowledge of library computers and software systems. Skill in the use of computer automated library catalog and circulation systems. Skill in oral and written communication. Skill in the operation of computers and general office machines.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Adult Services Librarian assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include ALA weeding guidelines and city and library policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

The work consists of related patron service duties. The unique needs of each client contribute to the complexity of the position. The purpose of this position is to provide support for library Adult Services functions. Success in this position contributes to the efficient and effective delivery of library services to the general public.

CONTACTS

Contacts are typically with co-workers, representatives of other libraries, and patrons. Contacts are typically to provide services, to give or exchange information, or to resolve problems.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light objects, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and distinguishes between shades of color. The work is typically performed in the library. SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

None.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Baccalaureate degree in a related field required. More than three years of related experience required. Must successfully pass a criminal background check. Must successfully pass a credit check.
