Scholarly Communication and Affordable Learning Librarian

Ball State University Libraries seeks an energetic, passionate, and creative librarian to champion open education, scholarly communication, and affordable learning initiatives. As a part of the Digital Scholarship and Scholarly Communication team, this person is directly responsible for advocating for, supporting, and educating the campus community on issues related to scholarly communication, copyright, open access, and open education. The Scholarly Communication and Affordable Learning Librarian will participate in the library liaison program, building collaborative relationships with faculty and championing affordable course materials, open resources, and open publishing. You'll be a part of our new Academic Learning Commons currently under development, participating in developing the scholarly communication and open access presence there. Position Function

Provide consultative, educational, and outreach services to promote faculty, student, and staff use of Open Educational Resources, Open Access scholarship, and University Libraries Institutional Repository (Cardinal Scholar); actively participate in University initiatives to support and promote emerging models of scholarly communication and affordable learning; advance strategic partnerships with university stakeholders related to course material affordability initiatives; support an inclusive, diverse, and collaborative work environment and service culture to advance the strategic direction of the University Libraries.

Minimum Education

MLS/MLIS/MIS degree from an ALA accredited program or other relevant degree such as digital humanities, museum studies, or art history by date of employment. Other relevant degrees will also be considered.

Minimum Experience

Experience identifying, assessing, and/or using open educational resources; experience with teaching and/or library public service; academic library experience

Minimum Other

Effective oral and written communication skills; ability to collaborate with colleagues in an academic setting

Authorization to work in the US Candidates for searches must have current authorization to be employed in the U.S. without employer sponsorship.

Preferred Education

Additional advanced degree, certification in, or familiarity with, Creative Commons licensing, open licensing, and fair use copyright concepts

Preferred Experience

Experience designing, implementing, and marketing academic library services; experience planning and implementing instructional sessions and workshops; experience with institutional repositories

Preferred Other

Knowledge of trends, standards, and literature relevant to open access initiatives in academic settings

Duties & Responsibilities

• Ranking: 1 Develop and assess initiatives to promote the use of open educational resources (OERs) to faculty, staff, and students. Consult with and assist users in identifying and assessing the quality of OERs for research and teaching. Consult with faculty, staff, and students regarding creating, publishing, revising, and using open educational resources.
• Ranking: 2 Develop, teach, and assess workshops, course presentations, and other educational materials supporting the development and use of OERs on campus. Provide individual consultations about identifying and assessing the quality of open educational resources Educate discipline liaison librarians about OER use, evaluation, and trends. Collaborate with liaisons to promote OERs, open data, open licensing, and open access publishing to faculty, staff, and students.
• Ranking: 3 Actively participate in the University Libraries liaison program as a resource for information about OERs. Develop professional relationships with campus partners to promote the integration of OERs and other options for affordable course materials into the curriculum. Assist and consult with faculty in identifying, evaluating, and adapting OERs for use in the classroom.
• Ranking: 4 Develop collaborative partnerships with university partners to promote and encourage the use of Cardinal Scholar, the University Libraries' institutional repository. Develop, teach, and assess workshops and other educational materials to raise awareness and use of Cardinal Scholar by students, faculty, and staff. Advocate for the use of Cardinal Scholar as an avenue for open access publishing.
• Ranking: 5 Collaborate with Director of Access Services and Open Education to provide guidance to faculty, staff, and students regarding open licensing and fair use of course materials; collaborate with Libraries' course reserves staff to advance the promotion of Reading Lists for the delivery of affordable course materials, participate in the work of the Textbook Affordability at Ball State (TABS) initiative.
• Ranking: 6 Collaborate with Director of Research and Branch Services to develop, teach, and assess workshops and educational programming for faculty, staff, and students to increase awareness and understanding of evolving scholarly communications models, the economics of scholarly publishing, altmetrics, open access publishing, open educational resources, and Creative Common licensing.
• Ranking: 7 Participate in the development and application of assessment methodologies to measure impact and inform decision-making related to OER, open access publishing, and related library initiatives. Measure and communicate the impact of open access initiatives related to affordable learning initiatives.
• Ranking: 8 Participate in planning activities, unit meetings, and working groups in the University Libraries.
• Ranking: 9 Actively participate in and positively contribute to the activities of the University Libraries, university, and profession through such opportunities as related professional organizations, presentations, committee service, publication, etc.; keep abreast of professional literature and scholarly developments in areas of specialization and pursue opportunities for relevant professional development.
