Job Summary: Coordinate with library staff to maintain the safety of library patrons, workers, and property. Build relationships with library visitors and serve as the primary point person for behavioral disruptions including emergencies.

Essential Functions:

  • Greet visitors to the library and maintain a welcoming environment.
  • Listen to patrons and provide friendly, patient assistance to them in finding what they are seeking.
  • Understand functions of all departments to direct patron inquiries appropriately.
  • Monitor and secure library building and grounds.
  • Monitor the library’s surveillance system.
  • Enforce library Rules of Conduct Policy in a manner consistent with the organization’s values and practices.
  • Work with library staff to provide information, support, referrals, and assistance to people who are experiencing mental health issues, addiction, homelessness, or issues of general exclusion or disengagement.
  • Assist staff with the removal of patrons who violate the Rules of Conduct Policy or federal/state/local laws and make recommendations regarding further action including suspensions and referrals to social services.
  • Keep up to date with local social service offerings.
  • Communicate with first responders and emergency personnel when called.
  • Work with library staff and authorities to follow through on incidents, including filling out library incident reports and any required police reports.
  • Manage the library’s incident reporting documentation.
  • Assist patrons and staff during evacuation or emergency situations.
  • Assist with closing procedures and securing the facility.
  • Maintain library disaster plan and update procedures in collaboration with library director.
  • Maintain safety waivers for library equipment.
  • Oversee maintenance, documentation, and inventory of emergency supplies including first aid kits, flash lights, AEDs, and fire extinguishers.
  • Oversee lost & found contents and procedures.
  • Pursue relevant knowledge of library and other related industries (safety, social work).
  • Provide assistance on projects when appropriate.
  • Provide assistance in other departments and at service desks as needed or as scheduled.
  • Follow library policies and procedures.
  • Maintain positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner which promotes good working relationships with patrons and staff.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
