SUMMARY

The Reference Librarian-1 position performs library work of a routine nature, focused on customer service, computer applications and technology-related tasks which requires the application of excellent oral and written communication skills, training and innovation lab work and also MS Office training.  The Reference Libarian-1 provides assistance in the location and selection of materials, performs complex professional and technical library work, and must demonstrate an entrepreneurial mindset applying new knowledge when interacting with patrons.  As a member of the Reference team, the Reference Librarian -1 will be asked to demonstrate new technologies and library resources on request.  A customer service oriented, and friendly approach to work and the patrons we service is essential to success in this role.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  • Serves as a reference librarian and interfaces with patrons while at the public service desk and fields inquiries in person, online and over the phone
  • Brings new programming ideas to the Department Head and Reference Services team
  • Handles routine inquiries related to reference including searching for books in the catalog, accessing books on the shelves, and retrieving information for patrons
  • Assists library customers in the use of library computers, technology, services, and resources including online databases
  • Registers and answers questions in person and over the phone or via email about upcoming library programming
  • Prepares informational guides in print and digital formats
  • Designs and delivers training workshops (online and in-person) on complex library resources and computer applications
  • Researches, reads, and reviews new materials to remain abreast of current practices in the library field
  • Participates collection development and maintenance
  • Performs bibliographic data entry, maintains records, and collects statistics
  • When requested, attends professional meetings and conferences related to the library
  • Exemplifies excellent patron service to all patrons that is culturally respectful

Education/Qualifications:

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, printers/copiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. Must have the ability to lift 25 pounds in the shifting and moving of library materials and equipment.  Must be able to navigate stairs, kneel, bend, stand for 30 minutes in duration, and stretch/stoop in the maintenance of various library collections on shelves throughout the library.  Normal speech quality and normal hearing ability expected at the level of 25 decibels through speech frequency, aided or unaided, to efficiently serve the public.  The ability to exert physical effort in sedentary to light work involving prolonged sitting, walking, or moving from one area of the building to another and standing for long period of time. Requires sufficient strength and coordination for lifting, pushing, and/or carrying the weight of small office equipment, files, or books.

TRAVEL

Occasional travel is expected, with the ability to perform various duties outside of the library including attending workshops, meetings, and other library-related events when requested.

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Master of Library Science from an ALA accredited university is preferred, but students who are in the process of seeking this degree will be considered
  2. Basic technical library skills along with the ability to deal tactfully and professionally with the public
  3. Excellent oral and written skills (English language) with attention to detail required.
  4. Knowledge of principles and practices of professional library work, including methods, practices, and techniques of library reference and/or technical services
  5. Knowledge and application of principles and procedures in cataloging, indexing, and organizing library materials
  6. Ability to successfully apply technology with a willingness to learn new and emerging technologies
  7. Ability to work professionally and efficiently in a team with a positivity and courtesy
  8. Clerical proficiency and ability to run reports and use various databases
  9. Willingness to work a flexible schedule including some weeknights and weekends
