If analyzing data, staff training and service implementation interest you just as much as reference, readers advisory and collection management, this may be the job you’ve been looking for.

What You’ll Do:

Under the supervision of the Public Services Manager, the Public Services Coordinator will facilitate superior service to the public by ensuring staff are well-trained, providing a high level of patron service in every encounter. You will also engage with the community through reference work, collection management, and services. The Public Services Coordinator is responsible for overseeing specialized tasks and projects as well as handling the daily workflow of those tasks.

Essential Tasks Include:

  • Acting in place of the Public Services Manager as needed, implementing department schedules
  • Working closely with the Public Services Manager to support and implement the strategic goals, processes and procedures for the Public Services Department 
  • Developing assigned areas in Adult Fiction and Non-Fiction and participating in our Collection Management Committee
  • Assisting patrons in person, online and via phone, providing excellent service to enhance their library experience

Key Opportunities:

  • Implementing a cross-departmental Readers’ Advisory training program that enhances service for adults, teens and children
  • Identifying, exploring and tracking trends to enhance department services and other activities that meet the needs of people of diverse backgrounds and interests
  • Engaging with the community through participation in events, organizations, groups, and other initiatives to inform development of Library collections and services
  • Supervising key committees and programs in the Library including the Display and Merchandising Committee, and our year-round Reading Challenges Committee

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master of Library Science from an American Library Association accredited institution or equivalent work experience 
  • At least two (2) years of work experience in a public service environment
  • Experience working in a public library preferred
  • Supervisory experience preferred
  • Commitment to continuous improvement and self-directed learning  
  • Access to regular, reliable transportation to conduct Library tasks

Working Conditions:

  • Primarily works in a standard, office workstation environment requiring extensive periods of sitting, using a computer keyboard, and reading a computer monitor. 
  • Frequently moves between different areas of the library to provide patron service 
  • Occasional work outdoors (outreach events, library programs, etc.) 
  • Occasional bending, lifting, reaching or push/pull up to 100 pounds and lift to 25 pounds 
  • Regular travel to meetings, trainings, or offsite work within the La Grange service area and across Illinois; position requires access to reliable transportation
