Saturday Children’s Librarian & PT Floater

The Saturday Children’s Librarian works the public Children’s Room desk two Saturdays per month, assisting patrons, completing Children’s Dept duties as assigned, and running storytimes and Children’s programs. Works closely with all library staff, including Children’s Librarians, Reference Librarians, and Circulation staff. Two Saturdays per month at the Children’s Desk will be assigned, and additional shifts at either Children’s or Reference may be assigned during the week, including weeknights and weekends as needed for coverage. Reports to the Head of Children’s Services.

Requirements

• MLS/MLIS from an accredited institution, NJ Professional Librarian Cert., & valid NJ driver’s license
• Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
• Customer focused, self starter, willing to assist others and take on new projects as needed
• Excellent computer and technology skills including proficiency with MS Office, Google suite, various library software platforms, databases, website management, and social media
• Must be able to exercise patience and sound judgment in public service situations
• Ability to prioritize and multi-task in a busy department
• Experience with library marketing, public relations, outreach and programming a plus
• Ability to work effectively as part of a team
• Experience with child development needs and children’s programming
• Enthusiasm for children’s literature and family services
• Excellent Reference skills

Job Description

• Answer children’s department reference, resource and readers advisory questions
• Help manage children’s programs, including storytime, crafts and others as needed
• Communicates with the general public, including parents, children and teachers, to strengthen connections, resolve problems, explain policies
• Collaborate with library staff on daily library functions and projects
• Help manage volunteers with task assignments as needed
• Helps maintain children’s online resources, online platforms, and library’s website
• Participates in outreach opportunities with local organizations, schools, and facilities within NP
• Assist with collection development, weeding and maintenance of children’s collections
• Performs additional functions at the discretion of the Head of Children’s Services, and Head of Adult Services, as deemed necessary

Physical Demands, Hours and Pay Rate

This job requires the occasional lifting 20 lbs of materials, ability to push or pull fully loaded book carts (50-100lbs), and be able to bend low or reach high for shelving and retrieval of items. This is a Part Time position requiring daytime, evening and weekend hours. Hourly pay range: $31 - $33 per hour commensurate with experience. Must be in compliance with NJ First Act.
