Melrose Public Library is a busy, community-oriented library. We are seeking a customer oriented, professional and tech-savvy part-time Reference Librarian who works under the supervision of two full time Reference Librarians. The desired candidate will enjoy interacting directly with patrons of all ages and backgrounds, and be able to work at a busy service desk with grace and good cheer. Currently in an interim location while our building is being renovated, we anticipate moving into our new facility in early 2025. When the library moves back to the West Emerson location, there will be an approximately month-long hiatus in regularly scheduled hours. Some hours may be available for orientation to the new building.

Reports To: Full time Reference Librarians

Schedule: This position includes regularly scheduled hours, plus ability to substitute on an on-call basis. The regularly scheduled work week is currently Thursday evening (5pm – 9pm), alternating Saturdays (1pm – 5pm), and one Sunday per month (1:45pm – 5pm) as well as substitute hours when available. This schedule may vary from time to time based on the needs of the library, and may include days, evenings or weekends.

Salary: $29.0961/hour

MAJOR DUTIES:

  1. Provide direct patron service with tact, courtesy, cultural sensitivity and discretion in dealings with patrons of all ages. A strong commitment to excellent customer service and providing a welcoming environment is required.
  2. Effectively answer patron questions in person, by phone, or by email and provide the public with computer/printer/copier assistance.
  3. Understand and implement library policies and procedures, including those related to confidentiality of patron records, in accordance with Massachusetts General Laws, Trustees of Melrose Public Library, and NOBLE policy.
  4. Assist at the Circulation desk as needed.
  5. Assist with processing of non-NOBLE interlibrary loan services including Commonwealth Catalog and mediated interlibrary loan services.
  6. Inform Supervisor of incidents/issues in a timely manner, assisting in resolution when appropriate.
  7. Perform clerical work for department as assigned, such as making photocopies of in-house forms or maintaining community bulletin board and displays to create a physically welcoming environment.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Ability to provide flexible vacation/sick time coverage a plus; candidate must be able to respond to fill-in requests in a timely manner.
  2. Demonstrated experience in providing excellent customer service to co-workers and patrons with tact, courtesy, sensitivity and discretion in a busy, sometimes hectic environment.
  3. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse constituencies and ensure a culturally relevant and sensitive approach.
  4. The position requires adaptability, diverse perspective and the ability to collaborate and appreciate other’s viewpoints.
  5. Demonstrated knowledge of standard print and online reference resources.
  6. Ability to work independently as well as part of a team, following established policies and procedures.
  7. Proficiency in the use of computers, and excellent ability to patiently assist patrons with technology. Experience with Evergreen a plus.
  8. Ability to accommodate the needs of a flexible schedule in a library that is open 61 hours per week, including days, evenings and weekends.
  9. Experience with automated library systems a plus.
  10. MLS degree from an ALA accredited graduate school required.
  11. Ability to accept feedback and instruction from supervisor in a productive manner.
  12. Excellent oral communication skills.

Physical Demands: Work is performed under typical public library conditions. Noise levels can be loud and library materials may be musty. The employee is required to sit, reach, hear, feel and talk; to lift objects up to 30 pounds; operate computers and similar electronic equipment; and have close, distance, and peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
