Job Summary:
This position reports to the Director of Technical Services. Primary duties include maintenance, upgrades, and project planning support for The University of Tulsa's library systems, which may impact any or all the five libraries under The University of Tulsa umbrella. This position will also support cataloging and metadata of physical and digital collections. This position ensures the continuity of The University of Tulsa's library systems and promoting excellent customer service to both internal and external University of Tulsa users.

Primary Duties:
  • Performs regular system maintenance tasks as well as special and on-going project assignments. Collaborates with the Director of Technical Services in diagnosing and repairing library systems, performing systems-related upgrades and updates, training library staff on library systems, and troubleshooting complex systems issues with library staff and/or vendors. Some projects may require this position to interact with physical and digital library materials to diagnose system issues or maintain library records.
  • Performs database maintenance activities, including original and copy cataloging of physical and digital collections.
  • Participates in metadata projects and collaborates on metadata initiatives with other libraries on the University of Tulsa Campus.

  • Supports Strategic Reviews, Talent, Collaborating Incentives, and Marketing by making holistic resources available in an expedient and accessible manner.
  • Supports Heart of Tulsa mission by contributing to the McFarlin Library's role in creating a holistic research environment for our one-of-a-kind programs and university community.


Required Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in information technology or closely related field related to position responsibilities.
  • High attention to detail, especially when balancing short-term and long-term projects.
  • Prior experience working in a library, preferably an academic library.
  • Excellent customer service skills and the ability to work with diverse students, faculty, staff, and visitors in an effective, courteous, and professional manner.
  • Commitment and patience when working with unfamiliar systems, complex issues, or during long-range projects.
  • Fundamental understanding of the purposes, obligations, and functions of a library.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and to work with minimum supervision in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Prior experience with Microsoft products and willingness to learn other computer applications.


Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications:
  • An ALA -accredited MLS degree.
  • Practical familiarity with library cataloging and metadata structures, and relevant tools for data manipulation.
  • Prior experience with library platforms or systems, such as OCLC WorldShare Management , OCLC Tipa sa, or other library systems.
  • Experience working with library software APIs.
  • Working knowledge of programming/scripting languages such as SQL , Perl, Python, JavaScript, UNIX shell scripting or like programs and languages.
  • Ability to supervise and train other library staff or library patrons.
  • Experience working or researching at any level in an academic environment.
  • Familiarity with library organizational schemas, library records, and electronic databases.


Physical Demands
  • Must be able to lift 10-15 lbs. of materials above your head.
  • Must be able to climb and work while on a ladder and lift library materials above your head.
  • Must be able to push heavy book trucks and place books on shelves in a repetitive motion.
  • Position will require long periods of standing or sitting, depending on the task.
