POSITION PURPOSE: Within Academic Affairs, the main mission of Library Services is to provide and promote a full range of supportive, quality services to CSUB students, faculty, staff, and community members. Library staff strive to meet patron needs by making retrieval and check out of library material as convenient and timely as possible. We provide library patrons research, reserve, and check-out assistance, lend and borrow items from other libraries, assist students at our AV campus with their research needs, assist library users on the use of library machinery, and monitor and bill for library material not returned in a timely manner.

Under the general supervision of the Associate Dean of Libraries, the Library Services Specialist II is responsible for performing various library circulation duties including but not limited to checking in/out library materials and providing assistance to library patrons. The incumbent serves as a resource for faculty, staff, students, and community, gain access to study spaces, and supervises the work of Student Assistants on duty. In addition, the incumbent assists with library opening and closing procedures as required including counting cash and securing the building. Schedule may vary, but typical work hours are Sunday to Thursday 5 pm to 1:30 am.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Circulation

  • Understands library circulation operations with a comprehensive knowledge of policies and procedures and their relation to overall library functions and departments to perform duties.
  • Performs service activities involved with checking in or out library materials and reserves using Circulation software. Updates statuses of library items as needed. Provides patron check out overrides as required.
  • Provides basic Reference assistance in retrieving call numbers, materials, or searching for the availability of items, but refers patrons to other Library or campus departments and resources for additional assistance when appropriate.
  • Assists patrons with inquiries and provides problem resolution. Responds to patron complaints about policy violations and conducts rounds as needed to ensure compliance.
  • Aids and instructs patrons in the retrieval of Library materials and use of Library resources or equipment.
  • Assists other library staff or Student Assistants in the processing of reserves as needed.
  • Assists in the acquisition of Library cards for Community Borrowers. Collects and enters confidential patron information into computer and confirms patron library privilege eligibility.
  • Monitors and contacts patrons regarding items in the lost-and-found.
  • Supervises student assistants on duty by directing work and providing guidance as needed.Security, Safety & Facilities
  • Performs opening or closing procedures for the building. This includes conducting sweeps of all floors; securing money, valuables, doors, the 24-Hour Room, study rooms, stacks, materials, and elevators; and notifying patrons of impending closure.
  • Reports damaged or failed equipment/software, furniture, light fixtures, or plumbing fixtures, elevator malfunctions and alarm failures to the Dean's Administrative Assistant or specified technician as needed.
  • Places out of order and caution notices when equipment or facility presents a safety risk.
  • Conducts rounds of the building to enforce library policy and safety, including notifying patrons on non-compliance with library policy, retrieving stray materials, checking study rooms for compliance to individual study room policies, and taking note of facilities issues.
  • Contacts Campus Police, Facilities Management, Safety & Risk Management, and/or the Dean's Office in cases of emergency, building alarms, and disturbances.
  • Performs yearly safety inspections of all levels of the library with a representative of Safety & Risk Management, communicates with library staff and faculty regarding safety corrections and submits completed corrections to Safety & Risk Management as remedied.
  • Notes areas which need cleaning or additional supplies and notifies the Dean's Office, Campus Copiers and/or custodial personnel to have the situation(s) addressed.Resource Sharing
  • Print pull slips for requested materials.
  • Retrieve and photocopy requested items.
  • Supervise retrieval and photocopying of requested items by student assistants.
  • Assist with processing of paging and digitization requests.REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE - High School diploma or equivalent certification and two (2) to three (3) years of related library and/or clerical experience or an equivalent combination of experience and education.

LICENSES - Possession of a valid driver's license or the ability to obtain it by date of hire.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES (SKA's) -

  • Regular and reliable attendance is required.
  • Full proficiency in all technical aspects of work assignments including a thorough knowledge of functional area policies and procedures and applicable work methods.
  • General knowledge of library collection organization and classification scheme and ability to interpret bibliographic records.
  • Ability to interpret and communicate library unit's policies and procedures and apply them accurately in performing work functions, as well as the ability to evaluate procedures and recommend changes.
  • Working knowledge of institutions and library's policies and practices associated with the ethical use of and access to library and on-line resources.
  • Basic knowledge of national standards and guidelines pertaining to libraries, including working knowledge of institution's standards pertaining to copyright and intellectual property protection and the ability to source and apply such policies and standards to avoid potential violations.
  • Full proficiency in the use of automated library system(s) and subsystem(s) pertaining to functional area.
  • Ability to fully utilize standard and non-standard features of various on-line resources and standard desktop software packages, such as word processing and spreadsheets, to perform technical work or assist patrons.
  • Demonstrated problem solving and research skills to address standard and non-standard work problems.
  • General knowledge of library accounting and budget procedures, including the ability to perform arithmetic operations to track and monitor vendor accounts and budgets.
  • Demonstrated ability to compile and present information in an organized manner.
  • Effective interpretive skills to be able to assist in resolving patron problems and complaints, assess patron information needs, and orient and guide patrons in use of library resources.
  • Ability to effectively provide lead work direction and training to student workers and an understanding of employment and payroll procedures related to student workers.
  • Knowledge of Library of Congress classification system and LC subject headings
  • Willingness to receive instruction and share knowledge.
  • Willingness to assist staff assigned to other functional areas with projects as needed.
  • Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism.
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.
  • Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.

  • Demonstrated ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality. Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.
  • Excellent computer skills and competence with a variety of computer applications including word-processing, spreadsheets, databases, on-line systems, Internet as well as online calendaring and email.
  • Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn University infrastructure, policies, and procedures.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
