Library Director

Knoxville, Iowa is a thriving vibrant city 35 miles southeast of Des Moines (pop. 7595). Due to a planned retirement, the Knoxville Public Library is seeking to hire a Library Director. The library was expanded and renovated in 2019. An outdoor space was added in Fall 2024.

Main duties: Under general supervision of the Knoxville Public Library Board of Trustees plans, coordinates, supervises and participates in the operation of the Knoxville Public Library according to local, state and federal directives. Responsible for all operations of the library. Works with the staff and Board members to formulate future plans for the library, develop policies, plan programs and provide services to the community.

Cooperates with County, Regional, and State libraries to promote services and programs. Supervises library staff including volunteers.  

Minimum Education or Experience Required

Five to six years related experience and/or training or bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university and one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.  Master’s Degree in Library Science and Information required.

Preferred Education or Experience Required

Six to ten years related experience and or training or a master’s degree from a four-year college or university and one to five years of experience; or Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university and two to five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.  Library experience as librarian, department head, or assistant director or higher with supervisory experience preferred.

Other Requirements – Certificates/Licensures

· Level VI Library Certification issued by the State Library of Iowa or attend training to meet and complete State Library of Iowa endorsement for Library Director.

· Bondable.

· 45 hours of CEUs in a three-year period.

· Meet City residency requirements (30 mile radius).

Full-time position with benefits through the City of Knoxville. Salary range: $58K – 78K.
