The Durham Public Library seeks an innovative, flexible, client and community focused, and experienced leader to serve as its next Library Director. The mission of the Durham Public Library is to provide ideas, knowledge, and enjoyment that promote community growth and enrichment.

The Director is responsible for overseeing all aspects of library operations, including budgeting, personnel management, program development, and strategic planning. Experience with grant requests is preferred. The Director works closely with the Library Board, and collaborates with the Town of Durham government, staff, and community members to ensure the library serves as an educational, cultural, and community hub.

Durham is located midway between New York and Boston and has about 7,000 residents. The town has a town meeting form of government. It is the home of the Durham Agricultural Fair, the country’s largest all volunteer agricultural fair. It is patronized by a number of surrounding communities.

This is a full-time, non-union position (40 hours per week). Starting salary ranges from $82,000 to $86,500, with full municipal benefits. Some evenings and weekends are required. A full job description can be found HERE.

Qualifications: A Master’s Degree in Library Science from an accredited library school and a minimum of five (5) (years of progressively responsible library experience.

About the Library: The Durham Public Library is a municipal library with a recently remodeled 15,000 square foot building and a collection of over 51,000 items. The library has a staff of 11 employees (7 full-time equivalents), and a FY25 operating budget of $579,267.
