Garland Public Library is seeking a creative and energetic individual with a passion for serving the community to further the Library’s mission and goals. Working with the Library’s Central Library team, this position provide library programs, reference assistance, readers’ advisory, and library services to the Garland community.
This position is responsible for performing a full range of library work, including the performance of a variety of duties involved in planning and implementing library services and programs. Serves as a non supervisory, librarian position for the Central Library, interpreting and enforcing library policies when the
manager is not present. Also, responsible for analyzing the public’s library needs, selecting library material, advising the public in their use of library materials, assisting library users with online resources and technologies, and handling reference and information search requests.
Pay Range: $51,563.20 - 65,665.60 (Depending on qualifications and experience)
Work Schedule: This position works a flexible schedule depending on outreach and engagement needs. Days, nights, and weekends are required. The position may also work at other Garland Library locations and participate in outreach events as needed.
- Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Plans informative and entertaining programs and activities for all ages by identifying and accessing audiences, recruiting attendees, accessing resources in the collection, and coordinating such programs and outreach events in order to stimulate interest and foster competence in reading, viewing and using information and ideas. - Assists in assessing community needs and desires for library services and programs, identifies potential facilities and organizations available for partnering, analyzing if there is enough demand for programs and services in order to proactively and reactively develop programs and services for the community.
- Plan and conduct age-appropriate programming and events to diverse populations.
- Guide and assist patrons in locating answers to their questions using a variety of available resources; perform reference interviews and readers’ advisory services.
- Instruct and advise patrons in using the online catalog system and databases, understanding classification systems and reference material procedures, finding materials, and evaluating Internet and other available resources.
- Resolve patron problems and modify library services consistent with established library policy.
- Perform basic computer hardware and software troubleshooting.
- Conduct instructional classes on technology, the Internet and the library’s online resources.
- Assess patron needs; plan, develop, and present programs of popular interest to the public; evaluate programming and activities.
- Promote the use of materials through displays, bibliographies, and related activities; work with the marketing team to publicize services.
- Maintain data, conduct periodic surveys, and compile narrative and statistical reports on activities and functions within the library.
- Participate in day-to-day library operations including, but not limited to, opening and closing routines and banking/cash handling procedures.
- Participate as needed in the evaluation, selection, acquisition, retention, discarding, or special handling of library materials.
- Supervise library operations in the absence of a Senior Librarian or Manager.
- Contribute to a positive work environment, take pride in the workplace, and have knowledge, sensitivity and awareness of diverse cultures.
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
- Master's Degree in Library Science, or within 6 months of earning an MLS degree, from an American Library Association accredited college or university
- Up to 1 year related experience
- Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
Preferred Qualifications
- One or more of the following are preferred qualifications for this position:
- 1-3 years of recent professional public library experience
- Experience with adult programming and public speaking in a public library setting
- Experience or background working in a diverse customer service environment

- Skill operating office equipment, computer equipment, and software programs, especially Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Outlook, Access)
- Skill in assisting with circulation desk activities including shelving and retrieving books
- Skill in resolving customer complaints and concerns
- Ability to analyze library related problems and take appropriate action
- Ability to work cooperatively and congenially with others, including other City employees and the public, individually and in a team
