Job Description: The Lead Librarian reports to the Head of Acquisitions and Cataloging and guides the activity of approximately 8 librarians and bargaining unit technicians (including at least 3 direct reports) who manage a complex set of interlocking processes to create/load all necessary data to provide up-to-date, accurate, and comprehensive descriptions for millions of items in the Libraries' collections. The Lead Librarian ensures accuracy of records and that the Libraries adhere to recognized national standards in resource description. The Lead Librarian works closely with two other Lead Librarians in the department (for Acquisitions and Electronic Resources) and with the Head to provide overall management and planning for this core Libraries department.

Responsibilities: Cataloging area of specialization: Each member of the cataloging team specializes in some format (e.g., serials, monographs, audio/video, music, and rare or special collections materials). Details in this section with be revised based on the responsibilities/specialty dependent upon who becomes Lead Librarian for Cataloging. Regardless of specialization, the following should apply:Practices - Develops and improves cataloging practices, including workflow automation, local policy development, and inclusive description.

  • Quality- Ensures quality and timely cataloging for materials in various formats, languages, and specializations.
  • Standards - Guides the Libraries on bibliographic description standards and practices.
    • Ensures adherence to national cataloging standards and protocols (including but not limited to MARC, AACR2, RDA, LCSH, LC authority files, etc.).
    • Leads, monitors, interprets, and assists with local implementation of changes in cataloging standards and tools (RDA, BIBFRAME, linked data, etc.).
  • Training - Builds and maintains training and education programs for staff.
  • Collaboration - Works with colleagues across the Libraries to share knowledge, coordinate shared cataloging work, and implement quality assurance processes.
  • Records - Oversees the creation, modification, and selection of records and metadata for print and digital materials.
  • Authority records - Creates and maintains authority records to ensure consistency in subject and name access points.
  • Outsourcing - Coordinates projects for outsourced cataloging.Management:
  • Directly supervises three other librarians and either directly or indirectly five bargaining unit (BU) library technicians. (The exact number will depend upon the final candidate; BU staff may report to a cataloging librarian other than the Lead.)
  • Provides leadership for department and Libraries to create best practices for cataloging materials in all formats.
  • Provides training and educational opportunities for staff involved in cataloging work.
  • Exercises independent judgment to resolve complex cataloging issues.
  • Mentors librarians through the Libraries' promotion process.
  • Ensures team provides original, complex, and copy cataloging of resources in all formats and languages in a timely manner.
  • Represents Libraries in consortia and committees.
  • Provides leadership for staff's professional growth and creates an inclusive climate.
  • Leads outsourced cataloging initiatives/projects.Professional Development and Service:
  • Participates in interdisciplinary library teams as assigned and works collaboratively and creatively to implement and enhance programmatic services that benefit the University.
  • Engages in activities that contribute to the advancement of the Libraries, the University, and the library profession.
  • Maintains awareness of professional developments, issues, and practices through research and activities that increase one's knowledge and abilities, and that positively impact one's performance and service contributions.Other Duties:
