Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T), one of the world’s leading technological research universities, seeks a dynamic and creative Discovery Librarian. Reporting to the Dean of Libraries, this position is responsible for operating our Library Technical Services Unit. The successful candidate will have the option to work remotely or receive a generous relocation package.

The Discovery Librarian is a multifaceted role providing leadership in information technology, overseeing the maintenance of the library management system (FOLIO) and other automated systems. Responsibilities extend to coordinating electronic resources and ensuring the accuracy of bibliographic records. In a supervisory capacity, the librarian manages staff training and development, evaluates work processes, and conducts performance assessments for direct reports. Collaboration is key, serving as a liaison with University of Missouri System counterparts, coordinating with library units, serving on campus and system committees, and participating in regional and national library organizations. The librarian also troubleshoots electronic resource access problems, evaluates digital products, and processes vendor-supplied records. Overall, this role demands technical expertise, managerial skills, collaboration, and a commitment to maintaining high cataloging standards while ensuring seamless access to electronic resources.

Specific responsibilities include:

  •         Manages and supports the library's management system (FOLIO), Discovery layer (EBSCO Discovery Service - EDS), link resolver (EBSCO Full-Text  Finder), and Holdings Management (EBSCO Holdings Management).
  •         Manages database packages access and configurations.
  •         Works with vendors to troubleshoot and resolve issues.
  •         Updates holdings data to reflect material transfer, withdrawal, and additions.
  •         Oversees cataloging functions including managing or performing both original and copy cataloging, database maintenance, and other related automation projects.
  •         Maintains accurate records of location and status of all library items.
  •         Keeps monthly records of title additions and deletions.
  •         Creates usage reports to assist with collection management and administrative reporting.
  •         Coordinates with research librarians in providing electronic resources to library patrons.
  •         Participates in library planning, including developing unit and project goals, priorities, and procedures.
  •         Hires, supervises, trains, and evaluates direct reports.
  •         Works with direct reports to develop and follow personalized professional development plans.
  •         Keeps abreast of new trends, tools, and applications as well as engages in professional development opportunities.
  •         Collaborates with colleagues working in related areas.
  •         Performs additional job duties as assigned.


Requirements

To be qualified for this position a candidate should:

  •         Hold an ALA-accredited Master’s Degree in Library/Information Science or equivalent degree in a relevant discipline by time of appointment.
  •         Be Knowledgeable of and familiar with the role of electronic resources or technical services in an academic library environment.
  •         Have a familiarity with technologies used in an academic library.
  •         Possess experience with integrated library and e-resource management systems.
  •         Demonstrate leadership ability and skills.
  •         Be knowledgeable of contemporary bibliographic-maintenance standards and practices.
  •         Possess an awareness of emerging trends in librarianship, library technical services, electronic resource management, and the landscape of higher education.

Additional preferred qualifications include:

  •         Supervisory experience.
  •         Familiarity with FOLIO and EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS).
  •         Proficiency in coding languages (SQL, html, etc.)
