PRIMARY OBJECTIVE

Under supervision, a College Library Assistant II performs a broad range of clerical and customer assistance duties to support the daily operations of a college's library to include: assisting library patrons /students in locating and accessing library resources; maintaining the library's physical and digital resources; processing inter- and intra- library loans; and supporting the cataloging of new materials. Performs related duties as required.

At the II level, positions function with a higher level of independence and responsibility and demonstrates the ability to apply learned job knowledge and skills in the performance of duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Assists library patrons in-person, via email, and over the phone in locating and accessing library resources.

  • Provides guidance to Library Assistants I and work study students on library procedures relating to circulation and reserve desk functions; maintenance of library collections; and general clerical duties to support library operations.

  • Staffs circulation/reserve desks and answers questions; directs patrons to library's collections and refers to Librarian for more in-depth assistance; and performs related activities.

  • Processes and places new books on course reserve status each semester as requested by faculty.

  • Searches stacks by call number for requested books; pulls and places books on hold for pick-up.

  • Assists students in accessing and using library's on-line systems and resources and operating public use equipment of printers and photocopiers.

  • Performs copy cataloging; accesses and uses OCLC database to download and update bibliographic records into the library's system.

  • Processes inter- and intra- library loan requests; receives returned materials and places back in circulation; packages and returns loan materials to lending libraries.

  • Notifies patrons of received inter- and intra- library loan requests; updates library's system to check[1]out books and materials and track status of loans.

  • Processes received shipments of new books/materials; checks and verifies packing slips against invoices to ensure deliveries are complete and accurate.

Trains work study students and new Library Clerk employees on library procedures as directed.

  • Assists Librarians in the interviewing and selection of work study students; may contact Financial Aid Department on issues relating to work hours and semester hiring of students.

  • Performs general clerical duties; prepares reports such as daily number of library patrons, book counts, computer usage, and related library activities.

  • Opens and closes library as directed.

  • Sets up library displays and prepares signage.

  • May assist in preparing purchase requisitions and place purchase orders with vendors.

  • May assist in packaging and processing invoices for payment by the Business Office.

  • May assist in maintaining library's account and expenditure records.

  • Performs all of the duties of a Library Assistant I as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduation from high school or equivalency certificate (GED)

  • Two years of library clerical/assistant work experience

  • Equivalent combination of education and experience may be taken into consideration

  • Knowledge of library clerical and technical procedures

  • Knowledge and ability to use and navigate library's on-line catalog and related library databases and systems

  • Knowledge of alphabetical and numerical organization of records/materials

  • Knowledge of Library of Congress system

  • Good oral and written communication skills

  • Excellent customer service skills

  • Knowledge and ability to use and navigate library's on-line catalog and related library databases

  • Some proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel)

Annual Salary: $44,846.29
