  • The Collection Management Librarian manages all aspects of the Library's collection of print, media, and online materials for book, serial, and electronic resources including all aspects of technical services and database systems that support library functions. The Collection Management Librarian must be sensitive to college needs, employee and student goodwill, and overall brand equity of MCAD as an employer and educational institution.

DETAILS: This is a full time, exempt position expected to work 35 hours a week. This position reports to the Library Director and is paid $57,000-58,500 annually.

**PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:**Collection Management: - Select material in all formats for the Library collection in conjunction with the Library Director. - Order new materials and resources, manages their invoicing and directs their processing for circulation and online access. - Catalog new materials (copy cataloging, but some limited original cataloging). Create and apply local metadata conventions and documents the application of LC classification and LCSH conventions in ClassWeb. Establish authority control and stay informed of developments in cataloging standards: RDA, MARC21, and subject heading application LCGFT, LCSH. - Supervise and train library staff assisting with collection management activities in particular the Technical Services Assistant, but occasionally student workers. Review workflows regularly and incorporate new or existing ILS functionalities that improve processes. Maintain up to date documentation of Technical Services workflows and best practices. - Manage the preservation and replacement of existing materials. Participate in regular evaluation of the current collection and the removal of outdated or unused material.

  • Systems Management:
    • Maintain the daily and overall operations of the Library's modules for cataloging, online catalog, discovery layer and online subscription integrations via technical support from our library consortium.
    • Work with the campus IT department to troubleshoot software and access issues with our ILS, discovery layer and online resources.
    • Collaborate with other staff members on maintaining the Library's web and social media presence.
  • Artists' Books Collection:
    • Oversee Artists' Book Collection including selection, acquisitions, cataloging, photo documentation and promotion. Create digital access to images in the collection.
    • Assist students and faculty with the use of the Artists' Books including the creation of online and print promotional materials.
  • Outreach to Faculty and Students:
    • Carry out annual library events: book sales, artist book contest. Assist with other outreach projects as needed.
    • Engage with faculty and students to obtain their recommendations for collection development and to promote existing library resources.
    • Provide individual reference or circulation desk assistance on occasion.
  • Facilitate payment of all department invoices and maintain current totals in the Library budget spreadsheet. Represent the Library with vendors. Order supplies for the Library.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Master's Degree In Library Science degree from American Library Association (ALA) Accredited program, or equivalent, required. Bachelor's Degree or significant coursework in Art History, Studio Arts, or Design, preferred.
  • Knowledge of current cataloging practices and metadata standards and schema, MARC21, LCC, LCSH, RDA, and Dublin Core. Experience working with OCLC Connexion, required.
  • Familiarity with integrated library systems, discovery tools, link resolvers, proxy authentication systems, and electronic acquisitions and resource management. Experience with Alma/Primo and Ebsco, preferred.
  • Experience with a Higher Education environment, strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated skills in working flexibly, independently and collaboratively with colleagues in a rapidly changing user-oriented environment, preferred.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to new standards and technologies and a willingness to explore and implement new practices to enhance services and complete tasks more efficiently. Ability to train other library staff in new practices, preferred.
  • Ability and willingness to support, respect and commit to embracing diverse backgrounds, values, and points of view in order to provide an environment that nurtures an inclusive community, preferred.
  • Strong communication, problem-solving, project management, and organizational skills, preferred.ENVIRONMENT: This position operates in a professional office environment. This position requires the ability and willingness to closely partner with team members and colleagues in other departments. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and occasionally lift up to 25 pounds. BACKGROUND: Founded in 1886, Minneapolis College of Art and Design is located in the rich creative community of the Twin Cities. Recognized nationally and internationally for its innovative approaches to art and design education, MCAD is home to approximately 800 students from 45 states and 15 countries. The college offers bachelor's degrees in fourteen disciplines including arts entrepreneurship, design, fine arts, and media arts; one MFA; three online master's degrees; and continuing education classes for all ages.
