We seek a knowledgeable and responsible individual to help maintain the smooth and efficient operation of the Library’s buildings’ systems and oversee the appearance and upkeep of the Library grounds. Under the supervision of the Assistant Director, this person will supervise a team of maintenance staff to plan, coordinate, and implement building and grounds related maintenance activities, services, and procedures at both the Main Library and Eastgate Branch location.

Responsibilities of this position include: scheduling and evaluating the maintenance team and coordinating the upkeep and cleaning of the building and grounds at both locations; assessing the conditions and usability of and/or performing industry standard research to ensure that building and grounds systems are functional and in good condition; trouble shooting maintenance repairs; researching, recommending, budgeting, coordinating and implementing the necessary equipment, furnishings, and software for building and grounds; coordinating delivery of items between the buildings and to offsite locations; developing and maintaining contacts with organizations, individuals, and others to participate and partner with the Library regarding building and grounds maintenance, service, and other initiatives; and performing timely and accurate systems checks, analyzing the condition of systems and planning and scheduling periodic maintenance.

This position requires a solid knowledge and understanding of building systems and how to maintain them; the ability to communicate effectively with staff and the public; the ability to work well under pressure, delegate work effectively, set own priorities for work to be done, and meet deadlines; and the ability to analyze professional problems, use sound judgment, and take appropriate action.

Work is typically performed indoors in public areas, staff work areas, storage, electrical, and mechanical rooms and outdoors on the building grounds and in our buildings as needed. This position will require regular travel to offsite locations within the library district to deliver library materials or provide services.

Requirements:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience of building and/or grounds maintenance procedures preferred
  • Experience working in public library or similar environment a plus
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university or equivalent combination of formal education or training and experience
  • Physical ability to lift, move, and set up meeting room and other furniture and other equipment
  • Regular walking, stooping, twisting, lifting, carrying up to 40 lbs. and pushing carts loaded with up to 200 lbs.
  • Ability to follow written and spoken directions in English
  • Licensed to drive in the State of Illinois and able to be insured
