This Associate Dean will support and supervise 3-5 coordinators of the libraries’ Collection teams and will also serve as the lead for a major operational objective: budget & assessment. The exact assignment of responsibilities will be made to match the knowledge, skill set, and interests of the members of the senior leadership team and may change over time as our organization and mission develop.

Associate Dean for Collections
Teams including the Special Collections Research Center, Technology Services, Resource Acquisition & Management, Collection Management, and Digital Scholarship & Initiatives work together to ensure access to the scholarly record & partner in the creation of new scholarship. These special and general collections teams support a wide range of creative and research activities. They collaborate to create distinctive collections and technologies that are easy to use for faculty and students of now and the future.


By coordinating participatory budget processes and consistently analyzing and sharing data, the Associate Dean can help balance our goals to develop distinctive special collections, increase access to information in the e-resources budget, curate and preserve print resources and physical materials, make sustainable technology decisions and purchases, and lead open access initiatives and campus-wide initiatives around transforming scholarly communication & publishing. The Associate Dean for Collections works in inclusive and ethical ways to steward budget funds and processes so the Libraries can meet our highest aspirations.

Requirements

This Associate Dean will serve as the supervisor to 3-5 coordinators of the Collections teams.


Candidates should use their cover letter to give an overview of their leadership experiences in one or more areas of librarianship or higher education.

Some areas to highlight include leadership in collection development and collection services; scholarly publishing & communication; special collections and archives; information literacy and instructional design; faculty partnerships on grants, research, and student learning outcomes; assessment & accreditation; student success initiatives; academic and educational technology; educational support services and spaces; or digital collections and new media.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Appalachian State University Libraries seeks an Associate Dean for Collections to support their colleagues in accomplishing our shared goals and objectives. This role reports to the Dean of Libraries and serves as a member of the dean’s senior leadership and executive team. Additionally, the Associate Dean will take the lead role in coordinating the budget & assessment work of the Libraries. This role will be responsible for the management, evaluation, and supervision of 3-5 coordinators and 2-4 staff who are direct reports.


Shared Duties and Responsibilities of Associate Deans


Leadership
Serve on University and Libraries’ senior leadership and executive groups including internally with coordinators, boards, and councils; and externally with Council of Chairs, Assessment Council, Associate Deans’ groups, and others.
Lead in the overall management of University Libraries. Create internal processes and policies and provide leadership for major organizational initiatives.
Represent the Dean of Libraries in on- and off-campus collaborations and events.
Lead a diverse team of direct reports, including multiple team coordinators and senior staff.
Share a demonstrated commitment to connecting the Libraries to the goals, initiatives, and people of the University and community
