About the Position
The Associate College Librarian & Coordinator for Collection Management and Scholarly Communications (ACL) oversees a division of six employees with responsibility for the acquisition, description, processing, and management of library collections. The ACL serves as a member of the Libraries’ leadership team and participates in strategic planning. The ACL leads the overall collections program, discipline-specific responsibility for which is distributed among subject librarians. The ACL manages the collections budget, generates reports and forecasts, and negotiates licenses for e-resources. The ACL provides vision and leadership for the Libraries’ open access strategies and supports open publishing among Haverford scholars. The ACL administers Haverford’s repository of faculty publications and develops best practices for showcasing faculty scholarship. The ACL contributes to the Libraries’ research and instruction program by supporting the Economics Department. The ACL works closely with counterparts at Bryn Mawr and Swarthmore Colleges to develop shared, mutually-beneficial services for and approaches to collection management activities.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Oversee all aspects of the Collection Management and Scholarly Communications division of the Haverford College Libraries (6 full-time employees plus several student assistants). Functional areas include acquisition/licensing, cataloging/metadata, electronic resource management, and physical processing
  • Lead the Libraries’ collection management program; coordinate collection development activities among the Libraries’ subject librarians; manage and allocate collections budget; conduct e-resource license review and negotiation
  • Develop collections budget reports; ensure efficient and proper expenditure of the collections budget; work with the Librarian of the College on identifying resource needs for annual budgeting process
  • Provide vision and leadership for the Libraries’ open access strategies; provide support for open publishing among Haverford scholars
  • Administer Haverford’s repository of faculty publications; develop best practices for identifying and ingesting content; collaborate with campus colleagues to showcase faculty scholarship
  • With support as needed from the Librarian of the College, serve as the Economics librarian; develop the Libraries’ collection in support of department’s curriculum and research interests; provide classroom and individual instruction to students
  • Work closely with library counterparts at Bryn Mawr and Swarthmore Colleges, with particular emphasis on developing mutually-beneficial services for and approaches to collection management activities

Line of Report: The Associate College Librarian & Coordinator for Collection Management and Scholarly Communications reports to the Librarian of the College. This position directly supervises two exempt positions: Head of Acquisitions & Serials; Head of Metadata Services & Visual Resources Librarian

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master of Library Science/Master of Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution
  • 5 years of professional experience working in a collection management/technical services unit within an academic or research library
  • Supervisory experience of staff employees

Professional Competencies 

  • Experience monitoring collections expenditures and generating budget reports
  • Experience with collection assessment and data-informed collection management strategies
  • Thorough knowledge of trends in scholarly communications, especially open publishing, transformative agreements, Creative Commons licensing, funder mandates, and national/international Open Access initiatives
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills, mature judgment, and initiative
  • Understanding of and commitment to the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Strong service orientation
  • Ability to foster teamwork and to work energetically, imaginatively, and respectfully with all constituents in an academically ambitious community
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to communicate complex information effectively

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience serving as a subject librarian/liaison, preferably in economics or another quantitative social science
  • Experience querying data in an integrated library system, especially Ex Libris’ Alma
  • Experience providing guidance to faculty and other campus constituents on intellectual property/copyright law
  • Aptitude for quantitative data management, manipulation, and analysis, especially utilizing software such as Stata, R and Python
  • Experience collaborating productively in a consortial environment
