Librarian I (Adult Services) is a full-time position at the John C Hart Memorial Library (Yorktown, NY) a busy municipal library with forward momentum. We serve a population of almost 47,000 people in the towns of Yorktown and Cortlandt, circulating over 300,000 items per year. We are looking for a person who is energetic, a solid team player and has a passion for the field. You must meet the civil service minimum qualifications or hold this position currently and be eligible for reinstatement or transfer. According to Westchester County Civil Service.

Current salary range according to our CSEA union contract for 2024 is $68,580 - $82,297.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collection Development and Management: perform varied and/or specialized professional library work in collection development, including acquisition, evaluation and selection, discarding, weeding and withdrawal of library materials.
  • Research and provide content for reader’s advisory, ready reference, and patron services.
  • Plan and implement programs such as book groups, workshops, author talks, and other activities to connect residents with library resources and build community among adults and seniors. Backs up team members, and assists others as needed.
  • The candidate should be current on library trends and technology. They should be active in professional associations, system meetings, and career development opportunities. Knowledge of Google Drive, Canva and Zoom is a must.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND ATTRIBUTES: Thorough knowledge of modern principles and practices of library science, good oral communication skills and the ability to carry out assignments independently. Able to perform the essential duties of the position, tact and courtesy in dealing with staff and public. Requires strong proficiency with technology, ILS, and digital resources for library patrons. Strong initiative, creativity, and a positive attitude. Ability to effectively organize time and resources; aptitude with administrative systems (Google, Canva, Zoom, websites). Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Master's Degree in Librarianship from a school that is accredited by the American Library Association

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of a New York State Public Librarian professional certificate.
