The Shorewood-Troy Public Library has an opening for a 19-hr part-time Children’s Services Assistant. Under the direct supervision of the Children’s Services Manager, this employee will be responsible for providing reference and readers’ advisory services, assisting patrons with library resources, and aiding in planning and presenting programs. 

Requirements for this Position:

  1. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively while engaging with children from birth to age 12 and their caregivers.
  2. Knowledge of children’s literature, library services, and digital resources offered.
  3. A commitment to the diversity found within our Community.  
  4. Ability to exercise tact, patience, and good judgment when interacting with the public and other staff members.
  5. Availability to work days, nights, and weekends as scheduled.
  6. Some library experience or experience in a child-care setting. 
  7. Ability to work independently and productively.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with other team members to plan and conduct children’s programming, including storytimes, STEAM Club, and more!
  • Working the Children’s Services Info Desk, providing reference and readers’ advisory services for children, caregivers, and educators.
  • Assist library users with resources such as accessing their online library account, searching the library’s catalog, using Libby and Hoopla, and more.
  • Maintaining the cart area and shelving books.
  • Maintain displays.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patron records and transactions. 
  • Represent the organization with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation in all relationships with staff and the public. 
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  1. Associate’s Degree in Childhood Development, Education, or a similar field and/or an LTA focusing on Children’s Services.

  2. At least one year of work experience involving working with children.

  3. Must have familiarity with children’s books and experience leading instruction or recreation for children up to age 12.

  4. Normal office skills, including working with Microsoft Office products, Google Apps, Canva, general technology, phone skills, and the ability to lift 25 pounds, are required.

The salary for the position is $16.25 an hour.  Benefits include:
