The Youth Services Programmer will be primarily responsible for planning and implementing programs, services, and outreach activities for the Library’s tween and teen patrons, ages 10-17. This position is also cross-trained in Circulation and may occasionally be required to cover the Circulation desk. This is a half-time, 25-hour-per-week, non-exempt position. The Youth Services Programmer reports to the Youth Services Manager.

Duties and Responsibilities

Customer Service

  • Provide prompt, courteous, and direct assistance to all patrons with basic information regarding the use of Library materials, equipment, and services.

  • Provide reliable and accurate reference and readers’ advisory assistance to patrons in person, on the telephone, or electronically.

  • Offer welcoming customer service to all patrons and ensure safe conditions for staff, public, and building operations.

  • Positively reflect the Library’s mission, vision, and values to staff and the public.

  • Address and resolve conflicts effectively and professionally with caregivers and minors.

  • Ensure equitable and respectful interactions with patrons of varying ages and abilities.

Collection Development

  • Assist in the collection development in the Youth and Young Adult departments as assigned by the Youth Services Manager.

Continuing Education

  • Stay informed of current information and trends at the local and regional library level. 

  • Participate in professional development activities relating to areas of responsibility.

  • Stay current with trends in pop culture, social media, and tween/teen interests to inform programming and outreach strategies.

  • Read professional literature and attend meetings, webinars, and workshops.

Programming & Outreach

  • Develop, plan, and execute engaging programs primarily for tweens and teens but may occasionally plan for youth and family audiences as well.

  • Demonstrate knowledge and the ability to teach STEAM, literature, and technology concepts.

  • Collaborate with the Youth Services Manager and Youth Services team on programming and outreach opportunities. Participate in community activities as requested.

Other

  • Familiarize yourself with Library policies and procedures and make decisions in accordance with them. Perform related duties as required and assigned.

Qualifications

  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in child development, education, or a related field preferred. 1-3 years of experience working directly with youth ages 10-17, including providing programs and customer service.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to identify and translate patrons' needs and interests into effective Library services and programs.

  • Competence in planning, organizing, and supervising Library services to meet community needs.

  • Strong prioritization skills with the ability to use initiative and independent judgment.

  • Ability to relate positively and effectively to patrons of diverse ages and abilities.

  • Capacity to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, email, social media, and web-based applications.

  • Must pass a background check.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee will intermittently stand, sit, and walk. The position requires talking and hearing. Specific vision requirements include close and distance vision and the ability to adjust focus. The position requires the ability to use hands to handle or feel equipment and objects and to reach with hands and arms. Occasional bending, stooping, and climbing are required. The employee must occasionally lift up to 25 pounds and push or pull up to 100 pounds.
