The Youth Services Clerk provides essential support to the Youth Services staff and patrons through program and kit preparation, book processing, shelving, desk coverage, and more. Occasionally, the Youth Services Clerk will assist the Circulation Desk in Adult Services, helping patrons with reference and readers’ advisory, checkouts, library accounts, and guidance on equipment, software, and services. This is an 18-hour-per-week, part-time, non-exempt position. The Youth Services Clerk reports to the Youth Services Manager.

Duties and Responsibilities

Customer Service

  • Provide prompt, courteous, and direct assistance to patrons regarding the use of library materials, equipment, and services.

  • Deliver reliable and accurate reference and readers’ advisory assistance in person, via phone, or electronically.

  • Offer welcoming customer service and ensure safe conditions for staff, the public, and building operations.

  • Reflect the library’s mission, vision, and values positively in interactions with staff and the public.

  • Ensure equitable and respectful interactions with patrons of all ages and abilities.

Collection Maintenance

  • Process new materials, perform minor book repairs, and apply labels.

  • Conduct daily shelf reading, shift materials, and pull materials as needed.

Continuing Education

  • Attends and participates in staff meetings when possible.

  • Read professional literature and attend meetings, webinars, and workshops as opportunities allow.

Programming & Outreach

  • Assists in program preparation and setup.

  • Participates in and assists in programs as needed

  • Support community activities and outreach efforts as requested.

Other

  • Familiarize yourself with Library policies and procedures and make decisions in accordance with them.

  • Perform related duties as required and assigned.

Qualifications

  • A high school diploma or equivalent (or actively working toward one) is preferred.

  • Previous work experience is preferred but not required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong prioritization skills with the ability to use initiative and independent judgment.

  • Ability to relate positively and effectively to patrons of diverse ages and abilities.

  • Capacity to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, email, social media, and web-based applications.

  • Must pass a background check.
