The Youth Services Assistant supports the Head of Youth Services in delivering programs and services for children and families. This role includes implementing youth programming, maintaining the children’s collection and spaces, and managing the youth volunteer program.

Essential Functions

Plans and implements children’s programs, including after-school activities, school vacation weeks and summer reading programs.

Train and supervise youth volunteers, and manage volunteer projects.

Maintain the children’s collection by ordering, displaying, organizing, and weeding materials.

Provide warm, welcoming assistance to youth and families while promoting library resources and services.

Prepare materials to assist with program setup and advertisements.

Provides circulation services and other library services as needed.

Qualification

High school diploma or equivalent Required. Postsecondary coursework in librarianship, education, or child development preferred.

Experience working with children in a library, educational, or community setting.

Knowledge of library operations, services, and principles preferred. 

Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Ability to work independently, multitask, and meet deadlines.

Creative thinking skills and collaborative approach to implementing ideas. 

Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed.

Environmental and Physical Requirements

Ability to remain in a stationary position (seated or standing) for extended periods.

Ability to move, transport, and position materials up to 25 pounds occasionally.

Ability to access and navigate library storage areas, bookshelves, and archival collections, including using step stools or ladders as needed.

Ability to use standard office equipment (computer, scanner, copier, etc.) and perform repetitive hand movements for data entry and document handling.

The library facility does not have air conditioning or a modern HVAC system, and temperatures can become elevated during the summer months.

Additional Information

The Millicent Library is a 501(c)3 nonprofit that serves as the public library for the Town of Fairhaven. This position is 19 hours/week and may require occasional evening and Saturday shifts.
