Position Description Manages a unit within a department. Plans, organizes and develops goals and procedures for the unit. Represents the unit to administrators, outside agencies and others on relevant matters. Supervises subordinate staff.

Major/Essential Functions

  • Manages the Holden Reading Room.
  • Manages reference requests in conjunction with heads of collections.
  • Responsible for opening the Holden Reading Room and Southwest Collection/Special Collections building as required.
  • Responsible for hiring, training, scheduling, supervising, and evaluating student assistants who are support for the area as well as an FTE for the area.
  • Ensuring that the SWC/SCL reference services desk is adequately staffed.
  • Oversees and maintains finding aids including the Reference Files.
  • Train staff to effectively use an array of resources, services, and technologies essential to reference for the special collections and archives, including but not limited to the website, bibliographies, microfilm readers, and audio equipment.
  • Assists in formulating reference strategies, policies, and best practices.
  • Communicate and work effectively with all units and in conjunction with immediate supervisor to improve service coordination.
  • Maintain procedural documentation to ensure work is completed efficiently and accurately.
  • Represent the department on appropriate committees, task forces, and working groups to ensure user-focused services.
  • Work in conjunction with immediate supervisor to provide organizational analytics that describes the impact of the department's services to the library, campus, and beyond.
  • Assists on special projects as needed in conjunction with immediate supervisor.
  • Works with SWC/SCL IT to ensure up-to-date website information and quality control for reference services.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Very good people skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and collegially both orally and in writing.
  • Know and comply with Texas Tech's policies, procedures, and work rules.Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree plus three years supervisory experience; OR a combination of education and/or supervisory experience to equal seven years.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in History or Library Science and some experience working in an archive.
  • Knowledge of History/Anthropology, some computer skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills,
  • Knowledge of Southwestern History,
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Attention to detail, customer-oriented, and proactive.
  • Knowledge of archival practices and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of research methods and possesses research skills.
  • Strong organizing and managing skills.Minimum Hire Rate 4000.00
