GENERAL SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the Head of Youth Services, the Teen Librarian & Volunteer Coordinator plays a key role in planning, managing, and delivering professional teen library services. This position is responsible for developing and overseeing teen programs and activities, curating and maintaining the teen collection, and coordinating the library’s volunteer program. Additionally, the Teen Librarian supports the department’s operations by assisting with acquisitions, collection development, and program planning to enhance teen engagement with library resources. Volunteer & Program Management • Oversees a team of 100+ teen and adult volunteers, handling recruitment, training, scheduling, and supervision. • Develops and implements engaging programs for tweens and teens, integrating input from the teen advisory group. • Manages the teen advisory program, fostering youth leadership and participation. • Plans and coordinates the annual volunteer appreciation reception with the Library Director and staff.
Community Engagement and Outreach
Serves as a liaison to students, school administrators, educators, and community organizations. • Provides library tours, school presentations, and outreach to enhance programming and engagement. • Assists patrons in person, by phone, and online with reference services, reader’s advisory, and general inquiries. Collection Development & Maintenance • Curates and maintains the tween and teen collection, selecting, organizing, and weeding materials. • Provides readers’ advisory services, ensuring diverse and relevant resources for youth. • Manages the budget for teen materials, programs, and grant-funded initiatives.Â
Marketing, Communications & Digital Presence • Creates promotional materials, including event calendars, social media content, digital displays, and posters. • Updates and maintains the youth services section of the library’s website to ensure engaging and current content. Operations, Compliance & Risk Management • Supervises the library during assigned weekends and evenings, ensuring smooth operations. • Maintains confidentiality of patron and volunteer records, processes CORI background checks, and ensures compliance. • Works in a dynamic, high-traffic environment, balancing multiple priorities while ensuring service quality and patron safety.
Professional Development & Additional Responsibilities
Stays informed on trends and best practices in teen services through workshops, meetings, and industry research. • Assists in other library areas as needed, including the Children’s Room and Reference Department. • Supports grant procurement and administration to enhance youth programming. • Performs other duties as required to support the library’s mission and goals.Â
A Bachelor's Degree is required; a Master's in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited program is preferred. A minimum of two years of experience professional library experience in a public library, with experience managing volunteer programs is required, or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge, Ability and Skill Strong knowledge of library policies, procedures, and automated circulation systems, as well as proficiency in information technology, including Google Suite, Microsoft Office, graphic design, desktop publishing, and social media for marketing and promotions. Possesses an in-depth understanding of teen and tween development, learning patterns, and engagement strategies, along with extensive knowledge of teen literature and materials. Capable of developing, implementing, and evaluating engaging programs for youth, and have strong leadership skills to effectively train, supervise, and coordinate volunteers and staff. The ability to manage multiple diverse tasks simultaneously, work independently, and adapt to a fast-paced environment is essential. A commitment to customer service excellence is a must, with the ability to foster positive interactions with patrons, staff, and volunteers. Possesses exceptional oral and written communication skills, proficiency in operating library equipment, systems, and databases, and a willingness to learn new technologies.
