JOB SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The Technical Services Assistant uses web-based technologies, integrated library system software, and oral and written communication to ensure campus-wide and appropriate external access to print, electronic theses and dissertations, and historical collections. This position also performs interlibrary loan functions and guides and assists UTHSC faculty, staff, and students in the use of library resources.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Performs interlibrary loan functions (borrowing, document delivery, lending) using ILLiad software, internet browser, and scanner.

  2. Serves in rotation with other staff positions, providing variety and time for other projects on weeks when serving as backup.

  3. Performs citation verification, searches online subscriptions, submits requests via Docline and OCLC, searches print stacks, and scans journal articles.

  4. Creates original descriptive catalog records for theses/dissertations and historical collections.

  5. Registers DOI for thesis and dissertations.

  6. Labels, marks, and secures new print materials.

  7. Searches for e-book title availability and provides options for purchase.

  8. Assists with checking out/in and locating resources at the staff information desk.

  9. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION: High School Diploma or GED. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)

EXPERIENCE: One (1) year of experience working in an office environment. (Experience working in a library preferred.)

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge and skill in operating standard Office applications (Excel and Word) as well as modern web browsers using Windows and/or Mac computers.

  • Ability to manipulate and maintain Excel spreadsheets (filters, sorting and other basic analysis functions).

  • Ability to be detail-oriented and persistent.

WORK SCHEDULE: This position may occasionally be required to work weekends and evenings.
